A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

pod filters..

You should also be aware that its not a question of just dropping in new jets and off you go. It usually is an exercise in trial and error as you are trying to balance the effects of more air going in and probably more exhaust going out (if you add a freer flowing exhaust which you will also want to do to get the performance you are after). It's part science and part magic and can be bloody frustrating.

Carb kits (Dynojet) can make it easier but its often still not a picnic and the type of pods you use can make it a nightmare. The cheapo Emgos are junk and offer no more filtration than wide open throats, K&N, Unifilter and Ape are much better.

This is not a project for beginners if you want good results.

good luck with it.

Thanks guys,
My next question was going to be for suggestions on what to ask for when going to the store to get the new jets. Any suggestions to start out? I understand that I might have to adjust according to how the bike responds..

What bike? Year? Mods?

Instead of playing 20 questions, please do a search for "pods" in this sub forum, and enjoy all the jetting discussions. Then post your information and some real questions about jetting.

Reinventing the wheel here no? This topic has been discussed ad nauseum in archived threads.

All valid points and my apologies for being so vague... :o
For starters.. The bike in question is an 81 gs 650g
There have been no mods on the bike as far as the fuel/exhaust/intake system.
About the question for the jets.. I didn't know if I should go up one size from stock or perhaps just tell ask for their advice.
For the "where am I".. Nebraska

I realize there are probably hundreds if not more threads on this topic. I'll again apologize this time for asking a question that has probably been discussed over and over and over.. I'm new to this site as of 8:30 this am and I'm still trying to navigate and find the info that I need. Thanks to those of you with the patience to help a newbie who simply wants to bring a classic back to life...

Step 1: Go to this site and get a Service manual and other details about your bike.

Step 2: From that treasure trove of information, check the stock jetting for your bike.

Step 3: Do all the maintenance that may or (more likely may not) have been done before (valves, full strip and dip of carbs, charging system, battery, intake boots and o-rings, etc.). Ed/Nessism has a list of newbie mistakes; don't do those.

Step 4: Figure out what jets you have already when you strip the carbs.

Step 5: Search the many threads on pod jetting here, to gauge how many steps up from stock you need to aim for.

Step 6: Pick up new jets for the 3 sizes in that range (i.e., target size and +/- one size from target).

That will get you started on the odyssey/path to madness that is adjusting the carbs for pod filters.

Good luck

Welcome to the fourm. This IS THE PLACE for all things GS.

Have you ridden the bike yet? A 650 will surprise you in the power to weight ratio. Are you new to bikes in general or just this particular bike?
Your bike, when tuned correctly and all the maintenance has been done, will get out and SCOOT ! :-\\\
If you haven't had it up and running correctly and are just wanting to "change the look to pods", I suggest you DO NOT.

First make it run correctly in the stock configuration. THEN, you can worry about looks. Just my .02

Again, WELCOME. There may be a few in here that know a little about the GS bikes. ;)

Thanks Dave and Mistercinders,
Honestly I was looking at pod filters just because its such a pain taking off the carbs and getting the original air boots to fit correctly. Now it sounds like it just might be worth ignoring the pods and just get her running outright.
I have ridden the bike but only about half a block before she died and left me pushing her back to the garage. That was only after getting her running by putting new o-rings on the fuel flow tubes and vent hose connections and fixing a stuck float bowl.. I thought I had her fixed:eek:
Now I'm going to try the complete carb rebuild and make sure the airbox is sealed proper, new plugs and caps Need to do some more research to figure out about new wires (if thats possible).
thanks for some direction fellas! Its great that such a site exists for help.
This isn't my first bike, but its my first bike that needs revived. I mainly got it to tinker around and figure things out.. Eventually going to teach my wife to ride this so I can ditch the passenger seat!

I agree 110%- get it running right with stock setup. Properly cleaned carbs won't need to come off for a long time- just add some fuel stabilizer during storage times.

Update....

Followed the link one of you suggested for carb rebuild.. Finished that and got her to run! Took her out on the county road for a test ride and she sputtered a little. That seemed to be only when I had the petcock on "fuel" but when it was on "prime" I didn't have the problem. According to some reading I've done I just need to do some fine tuning with the air pilot jets.?

I also discovered a new delima... The gears.. After I completely let the clutch out it feels like it takes a couple of seconds for the gear to "slip" to where it needs to be. Any thoughts as to what might be the gremlin here?

Thanks guys for your posts and help. This site is proving to be very helpful!!
