PODS and Sand?

Now, I saw another post saying not to use K&N filters because of the poor filtration of sand. Does anyone have any experiece with "dusting" an engine? How much does this shorten the life of the engine? Do foam pods filter any better? :-s :-k

K&N are good against sand....

K&N are good against sand....

There was some crap online from Ford truck guys, aparently the Ferd airboxes were defective and some sand got in.
Properly fitted K&Ns in the airbox or with K&N pods you won't get any sand.
I put them on everything I own, the engines always last forever.
Maybe using synthetic oil and selling stuff too often helps with this.

In normal conditions you are not going to have any trouble. I've had the same set of K&N's on my bike for 20 years. Bike runs strong.

If you have serious concerns and are riding in a real dusty and sandy area, go to the dirt bike shop and get the outer covers that go over your regular air filter. They are a pre-filter membrane.

There are always ways to filter sand. Dirt bikes ridden in the sand require the maximum protection. You get a good foam filter and apply a generous quantity of foam filter oil. Squeeze out the excess, and seal the base of the filter to the airbox with grease to prevent sand slipping by that that point.

It works well. Of course you have to clean and change filters after every ride.

You are probably somewhere south of that requirement I would guess. It just depends on your environment.

K&N filters do not filter as well as regular filters, so they let slightly larger particles in. Will they let sand it? I don't know...but the more dirt that passes the more wear it will eventually cause.

I'll try to remember to post the flow vs. filtration study link I have at home. It's very good.

One thing to remember about K&N's is that as they build up a layer of dirt they filter even better that a pristine filter with little loss of flow.
