I have an 81 gs450 and am new to the forum. I purchased the bike from another user and am very excited to be apart of the GS community. I've had a few issues so far but nothing too big. Thats what is fun about old bikes right? When I got it home the battery was dead. I was also having a problem with the starter button not working. I think I found my starter issue which consisted of a bad ground on the starter solenoid. Before this I was having issues charging the battery and now, after testing the voltage again after a ride it is at 14.1V at idle and it drops to 13.5V when i rev the engine up. Is this an issue or normal? Seems backwards to me.

It is normal if you have bad connections. See charging system health in my signature

Hi Mr. wildbill43,

Yes, all electrical connections and grounds must be cleaned, from the headlight bucket to the tail light including the fuse box, especially the charging system connections. Let me share some GS lovin'. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

Well it looks like I'm gonna have some cleaning to do. I cleaned all of the wires from the r/r but will go through them again with grease. Thanks for the input posplayr and thanks for the warm welcome basscliff. Will be in touch soon with updates. Maybe not til next week though.

Aaah that's right, Scottychop's wicked 450 :D

If I remember correctly, your charging system should be ok, but definitely check connections.

I'd also still go through all the stator papers and what not and test everything because even if Scott covered everything off, it's still a 30 year old bike with 30 year old electrics that could go bad...

I know this because my ignitor used to work fine, but after sitting for a bit over six years it now don't work no more...

Yeah it is scotty chops old bike. And yes it is wicked. I was going through the stator papers and when I got to testing the r/r voltage which is supposed to be .2V, if my memory is correct, my voltmeter was jumping all over the place. couldn't get it to give me a reading.

Pics in my signature link. FC is having the same starter problem you did. You might want to chime in over there on his issue. Pete mentions that the mounting holes for the starter are in fact the ground. I think you should run a black wire from the Al plate to the common ground I welded in the rear. That way you know the plate is grounded well and not just relying on zip ties to hold it to the frame.

I agree, I was thinking about that the other night. I am definitely going to run a new ground. My truck had issues this week so I've been working on that but excited to get back to it on the gs. Will keep you posted. Lance

My starter problem is that the bike would not even turn over. I checked every single wire, cleaned them, etc. I checked all the components too which checked out to be good.

Then I bolted up the electronics plate to the frame and voila! It turns over now.

I remember that Scott did an under seat electronics plate. Make sure that the electronics plate is grounding to the frame.
