A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

probably a dumb question...

but how do i remove the gas tank if i have no 'off' setting on the petcock of my '80 gs850gl? thanks:oops:

Your tap doesn't have an 'off' as it's only 'turned on' when the motor is running - it's a vacuum operated tap. If the tap is working fine, just pull the fuel pipe and lift the tank off - it won't (shouldn't) spill any fuel.

You can't, you have one of them special petcocks.
The tank will have to forever reside on the bike. :p

OEM, turn it to on.

If it leaks in the on position drain the gas into a can.

Yep, shoot, still dumb here, but supose a little smarter than I used to be.

I had to learn a bunch the hard way...

Want to ride, learn to fix.

Then they created the internet. :D

Now, I just hope everything I read is true.

You used to think that?
Briefly.

Just for a moment.

Not for long.

My first few bikes were Kawasakis, and they had RES, ON, OFF, so it took a bit to comprehend the vacuum part of the petcock and why there was no OFF position. :(

My first bike was a BSA and I used to dream of a fuel tap like that - mine just had 'might be on' and 'might be off' positions.

I've always comprehended it but dont understand it. Dont guess it matters really. Just something else that can go wrong.

My Fatboy has on, off and reserve.
Cant remember back what the others had but I think the old Shadow I had was the same way.

On is only on when the bike is on, otherwise it's off.

Simple, really... :p

Slow?
The GS or the Harley??

God I get such a kick out of a simple mention of the HArley. People get all riled up!

You can't ask for anything more convenient that something that always works without ever having to touch it.

don't say that too quickly........mine failed and it took me 3 days to figure out it was the petcock that made it quit running while I was driving to work one day! Easy fix, but frustrating.....
