Really like what you are doing with the bike.
Love the exhaust, whats the plans for the bars?

I dont know what to do with the bars at the moment. Maybe I?ll keep it as it is, maybe i cut it so it becomes a dragbar, och maybe I?ll chape a whole new one. Im not sure.
Thank you by the way. Above this posting you can se the corpse of a old rim im going to revive and put on.

The revival of the spoke wheels.

The revival of the spoke wheels.

This old wheel my wife found for me while scavaging for scrapmetal to make sculptures. She gave it to me along with another one just like it wondering if i could use them.
I said, dont know, lets find out!
So what you see here is the front wheel, the rim is terrible but the one on the rearwheel looks better. So i going to do a little swap. Ill keep the brakedrum and the spokes, but take the rim from the rear to the front.
Then im going to use a hydraulic brakecylinder from a opel kadette 1.3 and try to construct a custom brakedrum with enough bite. That way i dont have to deal with the ugly disc-brakes. :)
Oh, right. Im going to paint it in a off white colour with pistriped gold.
I going to give it...lets say 3 weeks.

The spoke "bolts/nuts" are apparantly made of brass. So the wheel must be atleast 20-years old. I would guess its from the 60:ies though. EDIT: I have researched and im fairly certain the wheel is from a BSA bike somewhere around the time of WWII! Haha! Thats crazy! :)

Here you can see the damage the passing of time under moist conditions does long term. Not pretty!

Haw haw...three weeks! omg.

Haw haw...three weeks! omg.

okay, its been 7 months now since my last post. Some things have actually happened with my project. One can say that i started all over again, hehe...
The front wire spoked whell my wife found now look like this:

I have put a hydralic brake instead of the old mechanical one, the brakecylinder inside the drum comes from a minicooper. :)
And i was not really happy with the paint job i did so i re-did it once again and i think the result was much better this time:

Just now im wainting for kawasaki gpz front fork springs and a vfr 750 oil cooler to install. Furthermore Im thinking wiseco racingpistons and rods from falco and order a new digital ingition from dyna. A lot of money...is there some oil-millionaire that want to sponsor me maybe? haha!
So thats it for now. Im going out to prepaire the frame for painting in dark grey wih satin clearcoat now...

That was the same wheel?!?!

Holy crap! How did you do that? The only thing I would've slated that old rusty wheel for was as decoration in a garden or something.

Your new paint work is also sweet. The cream / reddish brown look very good together. How did you to the inlays on the tank? Was that all done with an airbrush?! It looks very very good!

Fantastic work!

eThank you very much Tim Tom. That is very nice to hear, it makes the job so much more fun to do! :o)
The I got two rusty rims from my wife and you can see pictures from the one that was the worst, it was the rear wheel. The front wheel was almost ust as bad but it had no "rust craters" in it. It was ust very rusty. So i disassembled them both and used the thicker wirespokes of the rear wheel to build a new wheel with the front rim. But before that i uset a...compressed air tool that blows sand to get rid of flaking chrome and rust( mostly rust) and then used melted tin to smoothe the surface.

Then i did a couple of rounds with a thick primer and the colour with 3 layers of gloss clearcoat on top. I polished all the spokes and did new threads in the wire and nipples so I could use them without worry for braking due to old worn threads.

The huydralic brake was pretty straight forward, just drill new holes for the cylinder and fit the brakepads inide the drum.

The paintjob I did with a singel action paintbrush (50 bucks) and ordinary 250 ml paintgun. Its brown-reddish base, the red flake (you cant see it in the pictures) and then the scale shadows in same brown/red colour but with a dash of gray in it. I used a simple template i made out of thick paper. Just spray and move it, then spray again, then move it...
And to finnish the job 5 layers of clearcoat and sandpaper between layers. :)

Thank you, i only wish i had more time at my disposal. I can promise more pics in the weeks to come. :)

two more pics.

two more pics.

Okay, here is two more pics of what i did today. The first is my engine i cleaned with thinner and compressed air today. Tomorrow evening after work i will sand blast it then give it new greymetallic paint. In the backgound my frame that will also be sand blasted and given a charcoalgrey paint with satin topcoat.

The second picture is the rear tyre painted in cream white and tomorrow i will figure out what to do more to it. A red stripe and silverpearl topcoat possibly...i dont know yet.

And here is another detail of my newly painted gastank:

Thats all for now folks! :)

Well Darn it!!!

Well Darn it!!!

I was just out and messured the compression, thinking - it cant be so bad...
Yeah right!
These are the mesurements:
cyl 1 2 3 4
4,5 4,7 4,5 6,4

in the service manual it says 7 kg is service level and 9-13 is the standard.
F--k!
Seems like I have to order me a wiseco kit...anyone whe can sell it to me?

/Nick the Sad one.

Nah, it was not hot. It had no carburators at all on it. I have checked the valves and they at least was ok. Thank God.
The engine have got 100.000+ (63000 miles) km under the belt. so it was to be expected though.

Old School is a great guy!

Old School is a great guy!

Thank you! That was mighty generous of you.
I certainly take that under some serious thought.
You are a great guy! (as are 99% of the americans i have met)
Kind regards

Valves.

Valves.

I just took the top of the engine and checked the valves for leaks. No such thing - they are 100% etanol proof...
So the bad compression must be due to worn piston rings and bad gasket. God thing I ordered those things a couple of days ago. Hm...maybe im clarvoyant and do not know about it?

looks amazing. wish i had a small bit of your talent / experience. definitely looking forward to more pictures, and good luck!

Thank you, but I doubt I am as talented as I am stubborn. haha! :D
And the paint on your ride looks good to. Although its mor of a classic look. Im going for...i dont know what im goin for. I just do stuff and see how it turns out. I have for examplw re-painted the bike 3 times. So it is beyon any doubt stubbornes that I have going for me, not talent.

A little advice for you other hard working blue collar workers out there:
When I get home from work, im pooped. Very tired. And i ust want to grab a beer and hit the sofa. Intead i grab a beer and go out in the garage for ust one hour and do something. Even if its just loosen a screw, i make a point of spending 1 hour, no more and no less on workdays. It can make wonders for your project.

If i think like I just described, then the hour sum up, and on one month you have 32 hours of work on the bike. Thats something.;)

If it's any consolation I have a Harley and recently got myself a very cheap old '82 GS1100G to rebuild. Now I seem to ride the Suzuki more than the Harley. After all the work I have done to the Suzuki it has cost me about 1/5-1/4 what the Harley cost and is probably more fun to ride. While I will always love my Harley I am seriously enjoying the Suzuki and feel that it is in no way inferior, in fact it's probably a better bike all round. And if you look at it in terms of value for money it's crazy - the Harley just can't compete.

Anyway I love what you are doing. I REALLY like that you are doing your own thing. Go Niklas!

Haha! Thank you. I must confess i also have got a harley. 48-frame with papers and everything, long chopper with a rake and stretch that is lovely. The engine is a shovel stroker 1445 cc. Its in parts right now, but I will make it lovely during the winter. I got it this summer from my brother who is no longer riding the thing.
Thank you for your kind word and forgive me my recentment for those who "buy" the harley way of life. It is not directed to the "real" harley enthusiasts.

overhaul...

overhaul...

I did a complete top overhaul today. Some of the valves must be replaced, and the pistonrings was stuck in the pistons...
I wonder if i just should contact somebody with a lathe and do bigger valves on the top and do a big bore 1085 cc and get it over and done with...
I was thinking of taking som pictures...but it was to depressive so i realy did not manage to get the camera.

Sooo...setback, ah what the f-ck. What doesent kill you makes you stronger.

So i dragd myself out to the workshop today and took some pictures on the top and som bad valves. This is the worst of it. The intake valves in better shape than the exhaust. It was to be expected though.
I think this one have to be replaced, i dont think i can polish it to shape. What do you think:

And this is how the other ones look:

And this is a detail of the top. It looks kind of like this in each combustion chamber:

New stuff.

New stuff.

Okay, im almost done with the top. I have fixed the leaking valves, ported and polished the canals, uppgraded the springs, sandblasred it and painted it.
I have gotten new gaskets all over and heavt duty clutchsprings. I have honed the cylinders and gotten new cylinder rings.

I have also gotten a honda blackbird brakecaliper to fit on the rear brake, and to do that im going to transfer the front brakedisc to the rear. But befor that happens i have to put the disc in the lathe and shave it about 1/3 inch. It is also some welding work on the swingarm to make the brakecaliper fit.

Well, im to tired today, and its dark outside so i'll post photos tomorrow after work.
Cheers!
