I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I've got one of these headlight modulators from years ago(1980s) and was wondering if anyone had one on their GS and could give me the wiring code for this. Instructions were lost years ago.

thanks, Pat

If it's that old it probably does not meet the current Federal regulations that allow them.

It might be worth it to just buy a modern one and know that it's legal.

I know of prices that range from about $60 to $110. I don't have any experience with the $60 one, I have the $110 model in my bikes.

Just out of curiosity, what wires are there with that unit?

3 wires: White, red, black.

Pat,

I have one under my workbench from about 1983 or maybe 84. Took it off when sold bike in 2004.
I think it is a Sound Off Saftey brand from Hudsonville MI. (I remember that only beacuse Hudsonville is about 25 miles from here, and I had occassion to talk to the guy that designed it).
Do not recall the Model Name, but the "Q-Switch" you mentioned sounds familiar.
Maybe tommorow evening I can look and see what else I might have that could help you. I think I labled the leads so can figure out how to wire it in. I will see if same color code as you mentioned.

You can choose weither to hook it into eiter the high beam or the low beam (or before the hi-low switch but that is harder to do).
It has a control (to be mounted on handle bar so can touch it with hands still on grips) with a three position swtich and a push button. The 3 position swtich is for: On , Off, and manual On for a few seconds when push button. But mine would flash for the few seconds sometimes even if it was in off or manual position without pushing the button. That was annoying, especailly at night. I wired it into the High beam for daytime use. If it started flashing when I didnt want it to, I could turn to low beam. Would flash if something disturbed the voltage, like big throttle change or maybe turning on turn signal if battery was getting weak. Okay, I have yammered on about stuff you didnt ask.

I dont recall if I ever checked the voltage that it modulated to, but it did seem like it modulated from full to about half (as opposed to going from on to off).

Have seen some comments that federal regulations require that it shuts off at night, that it doesnt go below 50% brite, and that it flashes at some rate (dont recall specifiaclly but some range like 150 to 200 per minute).

Will look in garage and see what else I can find about it tomorow.
(Also have a set of Bates tail lights that go on the licence plate bracket from same period.)

I had it on a GS650G.
The two bolt holes on front of frame: I made a bracket that mounted to there and held some aftermarket horns (Fiam) and this modulator unit. I think those bolt holes on frame were for the stock horns.
