A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Quick Question - Stator cover removal without draining oil?

I'd like to remove my cover to put it on the buffing wheel. If I do this, am I going to dump oil all over the place? Clymer's says to drain the oil first, I wanted to know if there was a little trick like with the right hand side cover on the side stand.

Thanks!

I keep on seeing posts on ways to get the stator cover off without draining the oil. I don't see the big deal in draining the oil. What will it take, 5 minutes to drain and a few minutes to fill it back up, Ted

Same here. I wasn't due for a change so I didn't change the filter, but I drained the oil. Not gonna risk the bike falling over propped against something.

I'm trying to avoid draining oil with 80 miles, especially when it necesitates dropping my pipes and putting up with the ensuing mess.

Is dropping the pipes because of the V&H 4 into 1? If it is, so much for buying one of those.

Damn it. I have to confirm for the one I'm looking at. I don't mind losing the center stand, but I'm not gonna drop the pipes every 1500 or 2000 miles to change the oil.

I think it depends on your bike. For mine my center stand works fine.

I THINK I'm ok. I'm looking at the upswept megaphone and it doesn't look like it runs under the bike like some of their models do.

you dont have to drain the oil on mine. a couple tablespoons come out when you take the cover off though so be prepared.

I do trust you :) That's good news. I thought for sure between the stator cover and the right hand cover I'd have a problem. Looks like I'm good to go, taking them off and alternating how the bike sits. Thanks all.

Not sure if your motor is similiar to mine but watch the stator wire. It was really easy for me to rip the gasket on mine. Nothing more money and time didn't fix.

On an 850, you only lose a little bit of oil when removing the stator cover on the centerstand, and I don't see why it would be any different for the other models. Put a big drain pan underneath to catch the few spoonfuls that come out and some foil over the frame tube if you're picky.

Make sure you have a new stator cover gasket handy. You WILL tear the old one.

Thanks for the tip on the gasket guys. I don't have any spares. I'll have to order. I'll wait to polish this cover until I have the gasket. Cheers
