    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

R/R problem

That was fun! My bike died on labor day, then my car had a number of issues that I don't need to go into...

From the way the bike died, I was able to (correctly, it turns out) diagnose it as a charging problem.

Borrowed a friend at work's fancy-pants Fluke multimeter and tore into it today.

Thanks to the Clymer manual and the stator papers, I now know it's the regulator/rectifier that is kaput.

Not a bad problem at all, easy to diagnose and fix. I wish they were all this easy!
 
I think I've got problems too, as the water keeps boiling out of my battery. So far, checking that periodically and keeping it filled up has kept anything major from happening, and I've been doing that with the same batt for a year and a half or so. I haven't taken time to go through the electrical system checks yet, but have it in the back of my mind.

Water boiling out of your battery is a sign of overcharging. Overcharging also means overheating of the stator (alternator) or regulator/rectifier or both. Heat will kill both of these components. It's fairly easy to replace the r/r, but it's a little more involved procedure ( and more $$$) to replace the stator. It's best you do your troubleshooting and order the necessary parts as soon as practical.

My testing shows that my stock r/r is suspect. I just ordered an "upgrade" Honda r/r for a good price from Mr. duaneage, a member right here in this forum. I imagine someday I'll be upgrading the stator too.

Thanks. I guess I need to move that up on the list. Wish I had more time, or more energy. I'd hate to ruin anything, and cause unnecessary expense. Bike's got close to 17k on it, and nothing like that replaced yet as far as I know.
