    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

R/R problem?

I picked up a 81 GS850 the other day, great bike! Of course, I have charging problems.

I went through all the tests in "the stator papers". Stator checks out good. - IIRC, 76 V from each winding, no shorts, no opens.

I get 20V at the battery. I bought a new R/R, installed it, using the ground wire direct to the neg battery terminal.

Still get 20V at the battery. The R/R checks out in all the diode tests, so I must be missing something, but what?

No one wants to insult your intelligence but do you know how to read your meter ? Is it set to AC for the stator and DC for the battery ? Just checking.....

OK, is the battery any good ? Is the connector from the R/R good ?
 
The r/r is a combination unit. It is a rectifier and a regulator. The diode checks will only test the rectifier section. If you are still getting 20 volts at the battery, it is apparent that the regulator section is fried. You need another r/r.

i've had a few that read the correct amount of ohms, yet are still faulty..

get a honda one
 
Thanks, and no insult taken. (although if I did have the meter set wrong, I wouldn't have gotten the right readings at all ;-))

I figured it was the regulator section, but what are the odds of getting a bad one from the store? I did send an email to the store www.regulatorrectifier.com

If it's bad, I expect a replacement..but, knowing stores and manufacturers, I'm sure they will say I probably fried it. I guess I'll hear from them tomorrow...
