    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

R/R testing

I am checking my work to make sure I have the right diagnosis.

I have removed a 7 year old Electrosport RR from my 78 GS1000C.

Connecting my multimeter to it, measuring Ohms, between the red and the three stator leads, all three measure 2.9 ohms. Reversing the probes readings are zero on all three.

Using the diode test as spelled out in the stator papers, red lead to red lead on the R/R, readings are zero. Reversing so the black multimeter lead is on the red R/R lead, readings are 462, 455, and 454.

I am very inexperienced, but striving to master this electrical stuff. I need help understanding what it means. GSR is my only hope!

What do these readings say about the condition of the R/R?
 
If you have a diode test function on your meter, use that, rather than resistance (ohms).

You will need to do a total of TWELVE tests to check the rectifier portion.

You already did six of them, so continue. Do the same tests with the negative (ground) wire on the R/R. Your results should be similar, but opposite, of the tests on the positive wire. That is, with the meter black lead on the R/R negative wire, the three yellow wires should show zero, reversing the leads should show numbers similar to what you saw earlier, about .450.

If any ONE of those twelve tests is not right, your R/R is junk.

Thanks Steve. Your help is much appreciated.
Here are the last 6:
Switched to diode check setting
Black probe on R/R negative wire reads zero on all three stator leads.
Red probe on R/R negative reads 452, 448, 438.
Red probe on red R/R wire, zero on all three stator leads.

The readings vary a bit when I repeat them. Is that normal, given the connections aren't identical each time?

Does my rr pass?

The R/ passes, but you still need to test the /R. :rolleyes:

Yep, there are two Rs there, they stand for Rectifier and Regulator.
The diodes that you tested comprise the Rectifier section.

You need to run the engine to see if the Regulator portion is working.

Thanks Steve. I need a new stator,which is ordered, and to sort out the ignition on the way. I will sleep on it first, to let what I am learning sink in.
