Re-finishing Black Chrome for Katana?

Does anyone have any recommendations for re-finishing Black Chrome?

Is it even possible to get old exhausts re-finished in OEM looking black chrome? (chrome shops HATE old exhausts because they trash their dip tanks.)

Does anyone other than Jet Hot do the Gloss Black ceramic coating? (I think it is called Cermachrome) Is it true you can polish this coating to look like black chrome?

Does anyone have any experience with this problem?

Hi, I've seen some attempts in the past to re-do Black Chrome and none of them turned out all that well. A mate of mine picked up a complete genuine Kat 4-2 system from Germany last year and the Black Chrome was pretty average and rather than try re-chrome he had the headers and cans bead-blasted and powdercoated in satin black and it looks great. The powder has been on for over a year now and it still looks like new even on the headers, no blistering or peeling yet. When its time to do my Kat exhaust system I'll be having it powdercoated, and its cheap compared to re-chrome or ceramic coating. I've had the ceramic coating done on a system ($380) and it only lasted about 12,000km before it started to come off the headers so I won't be doing that again. Hope some of this helps, cheers.

I've read a couple of times about people that used regular powder coat on their exhaust only to have it fail. Not sure what kind of powder they used but I believe details can matter.

I've been wondering that myself. It's already made to withstand the heat (although not as hot as an exhaust I would think.)

When I went through this with my 83 1100E black chrome exhaust, months and months of research ended up with only two solutions. The first was to ceramic coat my existing exhaust system. I was quoted $400 for the exhaust as long as it was clean as a whistle and didn't need walnut blasting. The other option was finding a stock exhaust in useable condition. I opted for the later.
