Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hello Guys, I have been reading through all of the electrical post and still cant seem to find what I need, so this is the first post for me , and thanks for giving me the opportunity, I got this 1980 Suzuki GS850, it was a mess, the PO had the battery box out and said he had put in a new stator on it and the wires where a mess, I have the factory manual, and have everything up to par except the regulator, and turn signals, I have a new regulator and for the life of me I cant find exactly where it should be mounted, does anyone have a pic of where it goes?and it has 3 yellow, 1 green and 1 red wires that I cant find where to marry the yellows, I know they go to the generator, the elec diagram does not have that many yellows available , and Im assuming the ground goes to the frame, and red is "hot" , new battery, and am planning to get to the signals next, and to top it all off is that my blue point ohm meter has been sent out for repairs. HELP ! lol thank you in advance for the help

On my 81 850 it is bolted to the under side of the battery box. Ground it really well.

the 3 yellow wires connect to the 3 wires coming from your stator (these could also be yellow but not necessarily, depends on what type of stator is in there). The red is hot, and there should be an open red in the harness by the battery to connect it to. As you said the black is ground and the green could easily be the senor wire that a bunch of us connect to the rear brake wires? What type of regulator/recifier did you buy? As wympie said, the reg/rec gets attached under the batter box although lots of people attach it to the side if there's room so it's easier to access.

Here's a great link to help you out. Different bike but all the basics are the same.

Thanks a ton, the manual I have is a factory service Manuel and it does not mention where that regulator is mounted anywhere, I think I should open the stator up to see what brand it is , and it should make it easier to find out how to hook the r/r up, I had to buy new manifold insulators because when I took the carbs off they fell apart, I cleaned the carbs in pine-sol/carb cleaner with new gaskets and o-rings and have bench set them and I am anxious to get them on and and synchronized. Hopefully the Snap on guy has my meter on his truck today, again thanks

Try Harbor Freight for a multimeter. They are so cheap when the battery goes, it is cheaper to buy a new one. They work OK. The stator won't have any markings but if you see three yellow wires, it is likely aftermarket. You can see the wire colors where they plug into the regulator/rectifier. You reg/rec seems to have 3 yellow wires, a red and green wire. If there are no other wires, the green will be a ground and you should ground it to the negative battery terminal; do NOT ground it to the battery box or a bolt/screw on the box as the box is electrically isolated through the rubber mounts and the ground won't ground.

That's odd, because the solenoid is bolted to the Battery box, If not it will not work at all, I have bolted the ground (green wire) from the R/R to the frame where I have scuffed with a die grinder with a 120 grit disc on it, and have added it to the ground from the battery, witch essentially is going to the battery, I should be getting my blue point meter back from snap on today

O-rings

O-rings

I did buy my O-rings from the guy you mentioned in fact I bought four sets last time when I did the carbs on the DOHC cb I rebuilt they are superior to the others and the price of them is well worth it

Don't worry about yellow wires on the bike, trace the three wires directly from the stator whatever color they are and hook them up directly to the three yellow wires on your R/R. There is no specific order. This will probably leave two wires disconnected where one leg of the stator wiring took a detour loop through the light switch, a hold over from the older bikes where you could switch off the light, not necessary and a problem area in the original wiring. The red is +12 V and green ground. The original location of the R/R is usually on the electrics plate that is isolation damped with rubber grommets and as you can guess not grounded through the frame so it is necessary to ground it so the starter solenoid on the same plate will work.

I did get it hooked up correctly and am charging around 14.2 15.4 thanks for the help, now I'm struggling with the turn signals

thanks, I think I was over thinking it, but your method and advice did the trick It was charging well after I did what you had told me
