Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hello,

I'd appreciate any insight on what oil to use for an oil change and any part nos for aftermarket oil filters. Finally, how does one check the oil level? The bike is an '82 GS750E.

Thanks,

Chris

oh no, not again. This is one of those subjects that comes up every couple of weeks and everybody has a different opinion.

I personally go with Castrol GTX 10w40 and a genuine suzuki filter.

Some guys use whatever is the cheapest, some even use diesel engine oil.

Just avoid "energy conserving" oils. They will probably make your clutch slip.

It doesn't really matter, just change your oil often.

best price i've found on a filter is.. believe it or not, is advanced auto. they have the filter, and gasket both for 4 dollars. i like to replace the oring in the filter cover when i change the oil.. but usually the o ring itself runs 3 bucks.

I use soybean oil and old used Mr Coffee paper filters rolled up in a ball!

Just kidding...
I also use Castrol GTX 10w-40(usually on sale at WalMart or VIP) and the $6 stock filter from the Suzuki dealer. The o-ring is usually good for many filter changes but I would buy one and replace if this is your first change on a new bike to you.
Put the bike on the center stand and level should be 2/3 up on sight glass. After putting in what your manual says for oil, I would run the bike and then let sit for 10 minutes and recheck.
DO NOT (did I say DO NOT!!) overtighten the drain plug or the 3 bolts that hold the filter cover on!!!!!!!!!!

You should have a bubble window on the clutch crankcase cover. (right side) With the bike on a level surface and on it's center stand fill to the top of the window.

Manual calls for checking the oil level one minuet after shutting down the engine. If you wait longer, the oil level continues to raise slightly.

Since I've never bothered to take up space in an oil change thread here, I'll throw out a question to keep the Neverending Story from, well, ending.

I am using Castrol GTX 10-40, but wondered what to expect running Castrol GTX 5-30 - mainly - is it too light a weight & how would it affect the clutch going to a lighter weight?

I run all of my bikes on 20/50 Castrol GTX as the engines run more RPM & usually develop more oil temp than water cooled engines. I also change it every thousand miles on the street bikes & every race weekend on the dragbikes. I only use SUZUKI oil filters but you can take your chances with other brands if you want. After all, it is YOUR engine! Ray.

Agree

Agree

I'f you change oil often enough it probably doesn't matter, however I noticed a significant reduction in transmission noise and smoother shifts (81 gS750EX 58K miles) with synthetic Mobil 1 v.s. conventional 10-40.

Too thin. Also, 5W-30 typically has special low friction additives which can make your clutch slip if there is an "energy conserving" label.

just a tidbit, the grooove in my oil filter cover plate is not machined accurately, to reuse the gasket i have to get it in there the "right " way....i usually just replace it. the stp filters come with the gasket too. my dealer has to order both the filter and the gasket. what a pain.

"O" ring

"O" ring

I change the rubber "O" ring on the oil filter housing every 5 years.....whether it needs it or not.8-[ (So far, it's never needed it.)

I use the advanced auto filter castrol gtx, and another castrol that provides "superior wet clutch protection" honestly it preformed about the same. I have heard the 10-40 is now taboo among newer bikes and can void warrentees Should I be worried? Also I change the oil every 1000 miles or so.

On the looking glass, it can be a pain if you are not use to it, try to get someone to help you and move the bike back and forth until you can see the line move and then you can find it.
