    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

rejetted carbs and pods with stock exhaust?

I picked up a 82 GS650GL a few weeks back, and the PO had rejetted the carbs, added some pods, and put a 4 into 1 header on it. It runs really good, lots of power, no flat spots, etc. However, the header has a very distinct harmonic buzz right around 45 mph.. it is a bit annoying. I bought the bike for my wife, and she took it out for the first time today (it's been really chilly) she found it annoying too, but said she'd try to live with it.

My question is: Will it still run good (with reduced power of course) with stock exhaust? I have an 81 GS650G with a good stock exhaust that I was thinking of swapping.

Thoughts? How bad would the stock GS run with the header on it (I'm not going to keep it - planning on putting it on craigslist in abt a month)?

The Gs and the GLs often have different exhaust hangers due to the different frames - check the parts fiche from Alpha Sports for the parts numbers on each

The G will need some rejetting for the header

I'd recommend finding out why the header is buzzing and fix that, it's the easiest solution
Most likely the back hanger or the baffle
 
Thanks for the advice, and am going to leave as is. The harmonic buzz sounds more like exhaust, than metal on metal flapping/buzzing, but will check it out.

Have the carbs been vacuum balanced? Are the valves properly adjusted? These help ensure a smooth running engine with much less vibration. Yes, check the hardware to be sure the exhaust is securely hung. Check for exhaust leaks.

Thanks for the tip, and yes, I've read the top 10 newbie mistakes. :) . Engine runs surprisingly smooth... I expected it to run like dog manure when I first saw it with the pods and headers, but it has proven otherwise. It has an annoying harmonic exhaust buzz at a specific RPM ... reminds me of my dads old malibu with headers and dual exhaust that he had when i was in high school...cruising at 65 mph on the freeway it had an annoying exhaust note.... so you either sped up or slowed down to get rid of it. Suspect it os just the nature of the header.

BTW - I just bought the bike for my wife .... and have already ordered the valve cover gasket so I can do the valves.:D
