Took off my carbs today on my 1981 GS450L and decided to buy the K&N air filter pods. I am attempting to remove the old airbox and having a hell of a time. Any tips?

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

It's a matter of twisting, pulling, cursing, etc... It does help if the battery is out, any other bolts and stuff out of the way too.
I swear Suzuki welded the frames around the airbox on these 450's.

Good luck with those.. I'm assuming you've read the various 'Pods' threads and are prepared for weeks of mucking about with jetting etc..
One word: Dremel.
Cutting the frame is so drastic.

Pods aren't so bad if you've got a good baseline running bike to re-jet from. The airbox comes out easily if you remove the rear wheel and the plastic splash-guard/fender thingy directly in front of the rear wheel. Then slide the airbox straight back.

Why do people freak out and warn of the impending apocalypse when someone says they are switching to pods? Jetting these bikes is not rocket science, it simply requires a bit of patience and the willingness to spend the time to do it right using a methodical step by step approach.
If anybody thinks jetting a GS for street use is hard they should never try jetting one of the old air cooled 2 stroke race bikes for track use. Now that is fussy work with an extremely small window for success.

I used a drill and "swiss cheesed" the air box on my gs750e...took me 3 hours...
Having a few cold beers helped the process as well...
