A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have a 78 gs550 and I am making it a cafe racer and would like to remove battery , air box, and as much wiring as I can but still have lights so its street legal . "Can that be done ?'' I want to get rid of the side covers to open up the frame. I am pushing good voltage out of my alt. but it doesnt charge to 13.6v until I reach about 4000rpm, will I still have lights if I remove batt and other wiring?

this is the start from a bone stock non-running gs I got for 250 bucks with a clean title . ripped of the carbs cleaned them , fresh fuel , and two kicks vrrrrm.

I hope the quality of your work is better than your photography.:p

There are various threads in the archives on minimized wiring harnesses for you cafe and bobber folk. I suggest a search in the archives for more info.

You need to maintain a battery for the electrcial system.

Most people put a smaller AGM battery (which can be mounted horizontally) in the tail piece and the electrical components under the seat

You can keep a lot of the stock wiring with some clever relocation

Your charging system is underperforming. Read the Stator Papers. Start by adding a ground wire (a bit of irony there) from your voltage regulator mount directly to the negative battery terminal and see what that does for you.

I'm in the middle of a build where I've done the same thing. I raised the gas tank and put all the electrics under there. I am using a 4-cell LiFE battery (VERY small).

Here's a couple of pics.

Basically I took apart the whole wire loom and started from the ground up, only using enough wire to get the bike running and the headlight/taillight working.

Thanx for the info

Thanx for the info

I know thats a bad picture I took it with a cheap mp3 player . Its at my work so I fiddle with the bike often . It looks completely different from when I first got it and I am trying to go old school cafe by not spending alot of money. I fabricate my own parts and salvage anything I can. I work in a truck shop so you will see a rear truck tail light on it when I take a pic tommorow.
As of now I spent $250 for the bike and $190 on parts oh and $9 for 2glns gas . She had a brand new tank and tires when i got it.
