DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Removing Starter motor permanently

I am looking to make my '79 GS550 a kick start only by removing the starter motor completely. I am curious if this will negatively affect any other electrical circuit? Also, can I remove the starter relay as well?

Thanks

Remove them both, it will effect nothing else. There is still a connection from the battery + to the rest of the motorcycle.

You could use the starter switch for something devious, like as the trigger for the 40mm spud gun.

I like the way that you think. ;)

Is it also possible to permanently remove the starter clutch assembly? Or would this adversely affect the behavior of the engine?

You could remove it, but why? For all the effort and expense you will incur to remove it, what will you save? Maybe a pound?

And it's not even true rotating weight that needs to be overcome during acceleration. Because of the clutch mechanism, the engine is free to spin faster than the starter clutch, which will not hurt acceleration at all.

When you pull the starter, don't forget to make a plug to fill the hole it used to sit in. There is active oil where the nose of the starter sits, it will end up getting flung into the starter cavity, then drain down the "mystery hole" onto your rear tire. :-\\\

.

I puled the starter on my 79 and used the starter hole plug that z1 sells. The starter clutch on my 77 needs to be rebuilt and I was thinking of just swapping them and leaving it off of the 79 since it is kick start only anyway. All in all with starter, starter clutch, and everything else associated with the electric start system removed, you probably end up getting rid of, what, 7 to 10 lbs? Not really a huge difference... But no sense in carrying around that extra weight if you don't use it.
