DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

As I sort through the boxes of parts I removed from the '78 GG750C that I hope to reassemble this spring, I came across the headlight. It appears that the black metal cone that covers the bulb has a broken leg and is free to flop around inside the lens. Don't believe I can use it.

This lamp has a halogen bulb inside a Carello assembly. What are my options for replacing this unit? Is there a lamp assembly that uses the same three-prong connector?

Thanks

Yes, there is. JC Whitney has a Hella assembly for $47. There is a more generic light for $36. This one is listed "for off-road vehicles only", but you will probably never be questioned about it unless you have a rather strict vehicle inspection procedure in your state. Personally, I would rather spend the extra bucks and get the Hella unit.

A Couple of Questions

A Couple of Questions

Steve,

Thanks for the quick response.

The JC Whitney info does not seem to indicate wattage of the bulb. Would you guess it is the standard 55/60 W?

Will this unit fit into my trim ring/housing without modification?

Just want to sure before I buy.

First make sure that your current light is a 7" unit, not the 6" ones from the L models.
Not sure how the bucket is on your bike, but some are shallower than others, so you need to avoid a deep reflector/lens assembly, unless you scout the wrecking yards to find a deeper bucket on another model bike.

Bulbs? Most of the bulbs available over the counter will be the standard 55/60 watt bulbs. You can also get 55/100, 80/100 and 90/130 watt bulbs for dramatic improvement in lighting up the night. However, all of these except the 55/100 will greatly reduce your bike's capacity to keep the battery charged, at least until you activate the high beam. I use the 80/100 bulbs in my vans, but stick with the 55/60 bulbs in my bikes, even in my Wing with its 90-amp alternator. The reflector assembly in the Wing is plastic, so I need to keep the heat down. :(
Fortunately, the light output is good enough that I don't really miss the brighter bulbs.

Oh, when you get the bulb for your light, stay away from all the marketing hype about "Super White", "HID-quality", "Plasma White", etc. Most of those bulbs only have blue filters on them so they look like the expensive lights, but all that does is reduce the light output, especially the colors that really help you see stuff at night. There is some interesting reading on this topic here.

I bought a kit from JC Whitney for $18, although it looks to be special order now. Came with a regular 55/60W bulb, or something to this effect - reasonable quality.

i would suggest to use a headlamp assembly that takes a H4 bulb, not a sealed unit, the reason is that you can get H4 bulbs that emit up to 50%more light than standard while using the same power
its also easy to carry a spare

Someone posted this one awhile back and I saved the link...

Two free bulbs with purchase!

You can get an H4 lamp, with replaceable bulb, for under $20 which will be just as bright. The extra bulb(s) are only worth $5, and shouldn't be needed anytime soon.

I bought this one for $19, unfortunately it seems to be special order now. Works great. http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/...Id-100000165788/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000165788
