A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Replacing 650GL bars

I plan on replacing the handlebars on my '81 650GL with something not as swept back. I know this is a change many "L" riders make. Does swapping the bars require new choke and throttle cables, and a new front brake line? Or can they be rerouted?

Thanks!
K

After I posted this I tried an advanced search with different subjects. "replace handelbar" didn't cut it, but "handlebars" and "throttle cable" turned up a ton. I'll sort through those results and I'm sure I'll find something.

Carry on.

I have changed handlebars on a number of bikes. Rerouting the cables has always worked fine for me.

Depending on the bars you choose, your options will include bars and/or cables from the 650G, 650E and 650M.

The 650G still has bars with decent rise and sweep back, but not as much as the 650L. Not sure if the 650E has the same bars as the G, but they might be a bit lower. The 650M is the Katana model and likely has the lowest bars of the bunch.

It would be good to spend a few minutes with the parts cross-reference at Alpha Sports to see if the bars and cables are the same or not.

I put Daytona bars on my 650GL 2 years ago without changing cables. It took a long time to figure out cable routing that was smooth and kink free, but it works well and looks good. A VERY good improvement, BTW. :)
