    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I know that Electrex is an English company and I also know that, in the past, British electrics were horrible (I used to own a Triumph car and nothing worked right at the same time). I heard the same from people that owned MG's and English bikes.

Soooooo, the question is this: What's best? Rick's stators and R/R's.... or Electrex? I'm interested in your comments.

Also....if I switch out my OEM parts, what differences will I notice???

If I remember correctly, Rick's are just rebadged electrex
 
Go with Electrexs. They are recommended over everyone. I have both the stator and R/R package in my GS and have NO charging issues. :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:
 
I personally had bad luck with two of Rick's stators and one voltage regulator/rectifier. I went back to OEM.
 
I personally have a very high regard for the Electrex product, having installed a stator and r/r on my '80 GS 850GL, after having major charging hassles last season. The faultfinding guide makes it a simple diagnosis of the problem, and complete detailed installation instructions are included with the parts. Basically you can't bugger it up even if you're as useless mechanically as I am. :D

If by performance you mean continuing to ride as opposed to being stuck by the side of the road with a fried electrical system, DEFINITELY! :wink: The Electrex stator may source a little more current than stock, but that shouldn't show an increase in engine performance, just good, solid, well-regulated DC to charge and power and all those good things
 
I went a cheap way - rewound stator and Honda CB450 6 wire RR
Combined cost about $150 Cdn.
No problems for 2 years, after I burned 3 stock RR in 3 years.
Last winter I bought another Honda 6 wire RR as a backup for $35 Cdn.

Joseph Lucas - the prince of darkness!

Nearly all British cars and motorcycles were fitted with electric components from the Joseph Lucas factories. No wonder that the Japanese sold so well so fast!
I had a BSA Bantam when I was 16, the battery kept going flat - I was told to either not use the back brake or disconnect the brake-light switch! True!

No, there won't be a noticeable performance gain that results from using Electrex electrical components. However, stable power in sufficient quanty will certainly make everything electrical, like ignition components, work their best. That's makes it worthwhile.

where is a good place to pick up these RRs......I need to buy one for my '82 1100 (preferably at that price!). What GS do you ride?

Specify your model of GS and the year, pay by credit card, and you're done! Shipping ( expresspost ) is fast, you'll have your parts in 2 business days. For my '80 850 I paid ( CDN ) $185.39 for the r/r, and $220.00 for the stator, plus G.S.T ( government screws us tax ).

You can find lots of used regulators / rectifiers there, and most of them fits our bikes. You can buy Honda regulators from eightys in good prices, and they are generally still in good working condition.
I found out, I just refuse to pay close to $200 for something which cost $5 to make.
By the way my ride is 84 GS 1150 with front and wheels from GSXR.

Your bike sounds interesting....you should try & make it for a ride sometime....a few of us local GS'ers meet on some weekends & usually head up north to enjoy the great roads there for a few hours....if you are interested, I will let you know the next time we plan something.

Hey Pidgey, thanks for the Electrex info.... with the huge price difference, I am tempted to try the Honda route first...I know a few GS'ers who have done this without problems....I know, call me cheap :lol: .

Yeah, good luck with that, Tony. Not being mechanically adept
( to say the least ), I took the easier, if more expensive Electrex route.
Their instructions make installation totally idiot proof, which suits me just fine! :D
