    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Right turn signal problem

Since I got this bike the left signal has worked 100% of the time. On the other hand the right only sometimes. If it works when I get the bike out a particular day it will work consistently as long as the bike runs. The next time I start it; it may or may not work. Or it may decide to start working after I try and use it a few times. The last several times I have ridden the bike it has not worked at all. The bulbs are good. I also had the handle bar switch apart and cleaned the connections. I have done a search here but have not come across a similar problem that fits mine. The bulbs do not light up at all when the right blinker is not working. I'm not much of an electrician and thought maybe it was the relay?
 
The 78-79 had lots of problems with the turn signal controlmodule (mounted on the rt side of the battery box)
 
As Lynn says, the control unit can have problems. Not to be negative, but most of the units that started failing, started on the right side. I've been through it on mine and with others. You can still try checking/cleaning connections and the usual stuff first.
The 2 wire flasher used with your bike doesn't know left or right. If it was the flasher, either both will work, or neither.
The retail price of that control unit is $350 from Suzuki. I've seen them retail for no less than $260 at a website once. You might try salvage of course. Some members here say you can re-wire the bike to get rid of the unit and use a bar switch from a 750??
PS: you had the 29 smoothbore jetting problems, correct? Whatever happened?
 
You might also check your turn signal wires at least from the stem of the turnsignal back to where they connect. I found a shorted wire near the mount that had the insulation rubbed off was causing erratic behavior in my '82 850 GL.
 
Check to see it is GROUNDED well. That is what I have found to be the biggest problem with the rubber stalk signals.
 
Thanks for the responses guys. I checked wiring at the blinkers and find no shorts and everything is plugged in at the flasher and the control unit. I can't believe that little box can possibly be worth $300. I took the cover off of it and everything is clean that I can see. Other than that everything is sealed up in the lower part of the box. One thing I can add is, I can jump the connections at the handle bar switch and get the left blinker going but there is nothing happening when I jump the right side. It appears there is no power there. Is there a way to check the control unit?

I hope some one can tell me of a way to go around it. I don't care if the blinkers self cancel anyhow and I don't see myself spending $300 to fix it.

Keith, I have not done any more work on the carbs lately as I have had several other things keeping me busy. It is showing nice tan plugs on the pilot circuit and a bit leaner on the needle. The number 2 cylinder shows to be a little leaner than I would like though. I don't think there is a vacuum leak as the boots seem fine. I will revisit that thread soon with more info.
 
Check if the harness at the stearing stem and steering stops. Mine was crushed by the steering stop and cut some wires. See if the jacket is damaged, it could point to a problem inside.
 
Another thought: check that your globes are all the same wattage. Having globe of varying strength will cause things to muck around (for the system to work, it must be electrically 'balanced').
