A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I'm wanting to paint my rim's black because it's a 77 and understandably the chrome has seen better days.

What I'm wondering is what is the best route as far as painting them meself at home? Advice on brand/type would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance

I'd recommend Rustoleum. Up here I use Tremclad which is made by the same company. It is tough stuff designed as a rust proof paint. It covers anything and everything. Available in spry cans or quart cans for brush on.

I pull the wheels. Wash with mineral spirits and use a wire wheel to scuff off any flakes followed bya light sanding and a tag rag to wipe up the dust. Mask off anything you want to keep paint free and spray a couple of coats.

Instead of paint, a lot of guys now go with powder coat either done professionally or with one of the powder coat kits sold at places like Harbor Freight. More expensive and fiddly as you'll need to pull off the tires and refit them afterwards.

IMHO paint is easiest for us shade tree mechanics.

Good luck with it.

Cheers,
Spyug.

You talking about just regular rim paint? Or are you saying that Rusto makes rim paint?

regular rim paint . i'd use rusto first then follow up with the rim paint as it's supposed to be semi-resistant to scratching and resistant to chemicals.

I appreciate the point in the right direction guys. I'm thinking some black rims and some nice 130 white walls front and back.

I have a 1979 GS1000E I am looking to do this on.

Do you need to primer first? Also, would brake caliper paint work well / be as durable? I only ask as I know it would be a bit more chemical resistant.

What kind of paint options does one have for the forks? Powder coat or POR-15?

Thanks!
J
