I have an '81 GS850GL, and at around 50-55mph, the RPM's sit at about 4,250 in 5th gear. Does this sound about right?

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.
Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.
Hey Ed, you have one of these for the chain drive bikes? I know it would obviously change if you've changed the sprockets, or a 530 set up (tho you can get REALLY close to stock with a 530 set up as well) Id be curious to see exactly how far off my electronic tach on my 1100ES really is...
Depends on the tire

On my '80 850L, I have a 17" rear, always have had, the specs on the fender and the sticker on the head tube show the same size
....
True. I redline mine in 1st and 2nd, sometimes 3rd, but then I'm exceeding the speed limit by quite a bit so I have to shift up and back off.......Just to get ahead of your next question... these engines are incredibly durable and designed to SPIN. So grab that funny handle on the right and twist it hard and often. :twistedevil:
6,000 RPM and 80mph all day are no problem. In fact, the fun on a GS850 doesn't really begin until 6,000 rpm. Run it up to redline regularly -- it won't hurt a thing and you'll have more fun.![]()
Same on mine. Faulty chart?
Or Faulty tach readings...Ive found that these tach gauges, electronic or not, are not the most accurate from bike to bike...Sounds like a faulty chart. I know the guy who made it and it's not the first mistake he's made around here...![]()
