    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I'm missing the rubber on my gear shifter. Not a big deal. I called the local dealer and they only sell the whole shifter (if it's not discontinued). $33.00 + tax!!!! No thanks :?

I did a search online, but can't find just the rubber piece. E-bay didn't have one. My local scrap yard is a rip off and I doubt I'll call them again. $40 just for a center stand (u pull it). :evil: :evil:

Anyone have any ideas? :?:

I bought a new rubber for the gear shift lever at the local Honda/Yamaha dealer.
 
These pop up on eBay all the time -- I think someone has a large pile of NOS shift rubbers and is auctioning them off a few at a time, since I've been seeing pretty much the same auction and pics over and over again for months.

There's someone else who's been flogging the same batch of 2.85mm valve shims forever. Eventually, maybe he'll figure out that size is pretty useless (my shims are all in the range 2.60mm to 2.75mm).

The finned points cover is another eBay item that won't go away -- probably somebody who happened into a pile of them.

If you're having trouble finding what you need on eBay, try searching for items related to a slightly different model, or just "suzuki gs*".
 
For a quick cheap fix, try a length of rubber hose with the correct inside diameter. :wink:

This is God's way of telling you to put a nice set of all aluminum rearsets on your bike. No point in fighting it, just go with the flow... :) (try that on your wife when you tell her what the rearsets cost) :D

Well, I guess I don't feel dumb enough yet.

I've got another stupid question.

I've ordered the rubber and it has just shipped.

My shift lever is rectangular with a boss around it to keep the rubber on. I'm assuming that the rubber is going to be quite stiff. Will it press on without damaging the rubber? Or should I soak it in really hot water? If I do the latter, will that rubber return to form and tighten up on the shifter?
The rubber was only $3. BUT IT COST $6 TO SHIP IT. So $9 bucks!!! Better than the $33 the dealer wanted. :lol:

You see Dave, some people can use a computer and some people cant. Thats why Harry is so invaluable. :-) Only last week, he was able to explain to me how to remove an extra period from a URL so it would work. You too can learn to remove periods. There IS hope.

Dave,

You're right. Heating the rubber will make it a bit more flexible.
Soaking it in hot water is a good idea.
Heating the rubber and the shift lever with a hairdryer would also work.

And don't worry, the rubber will return to its original form when it's cooling down.

I've also used dishsoap as a lubricant to get it to go on. Works on handgrips also...
 
yes, heat the rubber and lube the shaft before trying to wrap the shaft in rubber...
Yup, it sounded bad in my head too. 8O

I replaced the gear shift rubber on my 1983 GS750ED recently. Quandryon is right about dishsoap.......went on like a charm.

BTW, got my rubber from Ron Ayers for even less, and ordered several minor items simultaneously to spread the shipping cost! :wink: :lol:
