    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Rust removal from tank

i removed rust from a gs1000e tank,,, by using a small amount of metho...about 1/2 cup to a cup ... wash it around the seams and generally splash it ... it does work ... regards david from kaniva :o:)
 
I suspect that Rustco product would work. It costs $50/gallon, which is 2.5 times as much as Evapo Rust, so I'm not sure it's worth the cost unless you have an inside line on the stuff.

worked great on my s2 tank, the PO left fuel in it and it sat in a shed for 20 years

cleaned it up great
just have to make sure you find a charger which does NOT have an auto shutoff

I tried it but you need a powerful battery charger, not a motorcycle trickle charger which is what many of us have on hand. Electrolysis is definitely on my list of things to do some day.

not really powerful from what ive read you can do it on a low mode setting of a charger
i beleive my low was only 2amp

pressurewashing after each session helped ALOT too
 
The Electrolysis method sounds like the way to go. I have a 15A DC supply that was going to be tossed out at work that will do the trick.
 
the only problem with electrolysis is there is a metal loss from the tank in the process.

for $50 and a hell of alot less hassle, that product or evaporust is the way to go (in my opinion). plus you don't have worry with the **** bubbling over and the mess it makes, dump it in shake it around let it set, and dump it out. you can get repeated use of the stuff so its not money down the drain, it's water based, safe and inert, stick your hand in the **** it's fine.

thats a product definately ok in my book. was just reading about a soybean based degreaser the other day that kicks ass and was biodegradeable too...

I just did this with a tank I had for my Honda ATC 70 and it worked like a champ, and there was on metal loss like when you use acid or anything like that.. It did take a little while, but just set it up properly and let it sit for 2 or 3 days and you will be set..

Oh and another thing you could try is White Vinagar, I have 2 sockets sitting in some now, its taking the rust off but it takes time.. It would probably take a week or 2 to do a normal rusted motorcycle tank..

From what ive read, and done myself, you want to keep the amperage low...a 2 amp trickle charger would work perfectly. As ive said, ive tried it, it works, but you have to change out the "sacrificial rod" a couple of times if you have severe rust going on. You might also talk to a radiator shop after wards. They may be able to get the last little bit, and then etch and coat the tank to stop it from flash rusting.
 
ive used the washing soda meyhod off basscliffs site. one tbl. of the arm&hammer det. to each gallon of water; then hook it to the juice. worked great and the tank was nasty with rust before(not just surface rust specks).i tried the rust away type stuff and it ate what it could before failure, and given the cost and amount of time involved i opted to try the a&h method. the only problem was that it i had some spillage and it ate some clearcoat off the tank and discolored it a little so be aware of that when making your decision. good luck with it.
