I have struggled with properly fitting screwdrivers for years and think I've finally found the holy grail of tip combinations.
I picked up an Ikea household tool kit (this one: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00169254) and haven't had a problem with a screw since. The phillips tips are varied enough that I hardly touch my junky screwdrivers anymore unless really really want to strip out a screw as quickly as possible. The tips included also would work in a 1/4" socket.
The kit has some decent pliers and a hammer just in case you think spending $8 is a steep price of entry for fastening/unfastening bliss.
