    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

sealant on half moons?

Do I (or should I) put something on the half moons on the valve cover before reassembly? If so what do you reccomend?

You shouldn't need anything on them, I dont use anything on mine and they have never leaked. If you want use some high temp silicone and they will never leak. We have stuff here in Oz called Ultra Blue and it is terrific.
 
I use sealer on the round portion that fits into the head. I'm pretty sure that's how they came from Suzuki so that's what I've always done.
 
I applied a thin layer of black hi-temp silicone on those areas...just in case.

I'm gonna seal 'em. Don't want to risk leaking and having to take it all apart again. Sucks, i'm really anxious to get her back together (just rebuilt the carbs, adjusted valves) but the wife has the cage, and I have no way to get to the parts store! I guess I wait one more day...:(
 
I believe the manual on my 450 said to.

I put either RTV silicone black or grey on them, a light layer on both sides. Can't hurt.

True but...we don't want any YAMAha labeled products going into our SUZUKI's.:mad:

Best to get the Suzukbond instead, or get Threebond since they are the company that makes all those XXXbond products. Z1 Enterprises sell it.:cool:

Do they make a specific GSbond? :rolleyes:

Being 'Bond' it should be "shaken not stirred" - right? :D

The only problem with putting sealer on both sides of the half moon is that it will now tend to stick to the valve cover gasket, too. If you are reasonably careful with the gasket, you can re-use it a time or two. Using sealer against the gasket minimizes that possibility.

I put a thin layer of high-temp silicone on the bottom (curved) part.

I'll second whoever said don't put it on the top - it'll stick like crazy to your valve cover gasket and could cause problems when you need to replace that gasket down the road.

Edit: Oh, sorry, Steve. Whoever, indeed.
 
I use Permitex 2B sealant on my GS1k's half moons. I also use the same sealant to coat both sides of gaskets just for extra assurance against leaks. The 2B is non hardening so it's not a pain in the ass to take things apart if need be.

i put jamesbond on mine.......haha I am so lame.....

any who yeah I found out the hard way that thos pop out after you take of the valve cover........that sucked I was test driving it and it popped out I was only about 1 mile away form home but man did that hurt all that hot oil all over my leg I had to put my foot up on the cover and get the bottem of my shoe all full of oil and my leg was on fire. good thing I was moving so the wind cooled it down pretty fast. :D Lucky guy here.

So the fact of the matter is put silicon on your valve cover plugs.
