DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Anybody work alot on these older GS's (1979) and installed alot of these-New Ones-that's what I got, I'm wondering if they're installed dry or should I apply a light coat of rtv sealer to them (outer surface to head)? TIA:D Of course the manual doesn't even mention them..

There is lots of mention on this subject in the archives in older threads. Consensus is to use something like 3bond 1194 on the curved portion of the half moons and set them wet, then install the cam cover. Some people like to set them in backwards so they can't pop out due to crankcase pressure.

Use the search feature on this one. Lots of installation info on the moons. Some put flange in, some out. Various sealants too. Lots has been discussed about these. Read up and you can see all the past answers to this question and see what feels right to you.

Have just been reading up on this too.

Careful on torque of cover bolts seems people have problems using factory torque specs and a lot strip out, or break bolts.

I think we had covered that in the other thread you had going..in fact I was the one that brought up the Three Bond and turning the half moons around so the rim is on the inside of the lip.

Some people like to set them in backwards so they can't pop out due to crankcase pressure.
Never have figured that one out. Considering that there is a (relatively) big hole at the top, inside the breather cover, how much blow-by do you have to have to build up any pressure in the crankcase?

Seems to me that if you have ANY "crankcase pressure", spitting out the half-moons would be the least of your problems. :o

.

I installed mine (16 valve) flange OUT with black RTV on the curve.

No leaks or issues, and I am often riding at 5,000-10,000 RPMs and spend 95% of my ride time at 100km/h or more.

Is it mandatory to change out the half moons EACH TIME you replace a valve gasket?

No if you are real careful about it; but be prepared just in case. Z1 sells them pretty cheap so have a look see there

If the top of the half moon does not protrude slightly above the gasket surface they should be replaced. I used Permatex 97 on mine, flange in.
Considering how cheap they are it's worth having a set on hand when you go in there.

update..I meticulously cleaned and scraped all the HondaBond off w/my fingernails! Installed reversed with GM rtv engine sealer on radius's and greased engine side of camcover gasket and it has been perfect! Thanks all! In fact tonight it got a can of Gunk degreaser scrubbed on and then hit it with a psi washer running hot water, then blown off.:D
Now I need to reseal the tensioner w/the tutorial and resolved the slight fuel leaks below #2 & #3 and maybe even #4 carbs & I'll be all done. and the tires..lol
