Seat for 1978 gs1000e

Is that the stepped seat? I thought Pit Replica did not make that.

Oh, it's definitely a stepped seat. The bike is a '79 GS1000E. The stepped seat on the '78 & '79 were the same except the size of the squares of the pattern, the '78 being having longer squares. I believe the '78 & '79 C model with the non stepped seat were the same also except for same pattern differences. The '80 GS1000E has a seat that's not as stepped. I had to request the gold lettering as that was what was original as stock. They were using white thinking it was the original color.
Here's another view of the seat. I would have to take a side view to show just how stepped it really is as these pictures just don't display that.

I am trying to change the seat cover on the gs1000e 1978. How do I detach the molding that is held on by several rusty caps that seem to be on a threaded screw or bolt? I don't want to pop something off that doesn't need to be popped off. Any ideas on how to remove them?

On BikeCliff's Website there's a tutorial on how to recover a seat. Just remember one thing, heat is your friend as far as getting the vinyl flexible and stretchy. I kept mine on the dash of my closed window car in the hot Florida sun to get it very easy to work with.

Here's the tutorial: I think you'll like it.

Two things, when you take the old seat cover off, don't bend the old pointed tabs out any more than you have to to get the old cover to release. Lowe's sells a pick set for about $10.00. There is a pick in the kit that is bent at 90 degrees. When you put the new cover on, you can use that pick parallel to the seat pan to pull the fabric and cause the point to pierce the fabric. This way you won't break the points off, and you can use the butt of the pick to close it against the pan to secure the cover. Secondly, you can use 3M spray adhesive to temporarily hold the sides until you can get the bike in the sun for a day. Helps keep wrinkles out. The white lettering looks real good with a black paint job. I'm glad I didn't get the gold.

One other thing, if you look at enough seats as I have done, you'll see where there's sometimes a unusual design (for lack of a better word) trying to come up through the vinyl. What this is, is the tubular rubber that fits on the edge of the seat pan, to protect the seat pan from cutting into the seat cover vinyl. Over time it gives way, stretches,
and works it way free from the pan up under the seat cover resulting in
a unwelcome design pressing through the vinyl.
To remedy that from happening with the new seat cover, I used very small diameter door gaurd edging. It worked very well and I gorilla glued it to the seat pan edge to keep it there. I used one on each side and one on the back making sure I didn't have a turn where the individual pieces joined.
When I covered the seat, and it was much easier than I had thought it would be, I started from the front, then secured the back (to get it centered, important) with just enough pressure to snag the tabs without cutting through the vinyl, then I started the sides at the front putting just enough pressure for the seat cover to catch the pointed tabs without cutting the vinyl, so I worked the sides front to back alternating each side with each tab as I worked towards the back. Doing this will give you the opportunity to correct any missalignments, stretch the cover, and eliminate wrinkles.
The only concern I had was the back, you must stretch the vinyl enough so that when you put the hand rail on, the vinyl bead joining the back vinyl (the piece with the lettering) doesn't end up over any of the four holes for the hand rail and sits on edge of the sides of the seat pan.
Only when you get everything stretched, centered, and aligned should you start piercing the vinyl with the tabs. It's at that point your pretty much committed. Just don't bend the tabs back down much until your absolutely sure your satisfied with it.

Here's a pic of my bike and seat before I recovered it, now you can see the step of this stepped seat and you can see that rubber tube that was used on the edge of the pan and how it's come off making a funny pattern underneath the vinyl cover.

A new seat cover will do alot for your bike, a new seat covering with gold lettering, well it's a personal preference. I'm just glad I had them do gold lettering because dirt shows up less and that's what I'm used to, having a '78 and now this '79.
Have Fun!

Damn Steve, that sure is one nice looking '79 you've got there!

so was your '78 for that matter...

I've got a case of bike envy!

The 78 1000 E /C seat cover looks like the one SVSOOKE posted. That pattern applied ONLY to the 78 model year.. The one that Sedelen posted applied to the 79/80 model years. Does that clear up any confusion for you guys? As i stated in the earlier post, Pit Replica DOES NOT curently make the 78 model cover. I sent them one for replication and it will eventually come on line from them., They DO make the 79/80 seat covers for both the flat and stepped seats. The seat pans and foam are all the same for the 78 thru 80 1000s. Its just that 78 models had that one particular pattern then was changed in 79.

Is that the stepped seat? I thought Pit Replica did not make that.

After further checking on Pit Replica's on-line store, and even though it says it's for a '78 & '79 GS1000E, '79 & '80 GS1000S, '80 GS1000ET, & '80
GS1000G, it states in the description that it's for the "Flat Type Seat" (does that mean "non-stepped" C model?)
I know the pattern is wrong for the '78 GS1000 (Which they're now in the process (long process) of making thanks to Chuck), and since they don't have any other GS1000 seat covers listed at their store, I have to believe this was the seat cover I used on my '79 GS1000E stepped seat, it worked out well. Here's their current E-bay auction for that seat cover. It did in fact come with a seat strap which I gave to Chuck.

Here's another GS1000E/S seat cover from England, about the same price,
P & K classic bikes, I can't tell you anything about these folks, and even though they hand make these after the order is placed, I can't tell you if the pattern will be right as they show a 850G seat cover. They say their seat cover will fit the flat or slightly stepped seat. Don't know if there's a logo on the back or not.

They have an interesting web-site, has a video on replacing the hooks with new hook strips you rivet on, just in case yours are too far gone.

Yup,says flat seat. That's why I was puzzled.I guess you stretched that flat seat into a stepped seat.
Someone can get a free seat if they send their stepped seat in,perhaps?

And it fit like a glove too. I don't know if they really know what they got, I mean they say '78 & '79 GS1000E (which is stepped) and then say it's for a flat seat. I notified them of a '82, '83 GS1100E seat they were listing as a GS1000 seat, they finally corrected that.
As far as getting a free seat cover if you send in a stepped seat cover,
well, I still have my old one. Want it?

Sedelen,
How do I contact Pit Replica and get a seat cover like the one you have pictured? I need one like you have pictured with the stepped seat and gold Suzuki on the back. Do you have phone # and part #.

I have looked everywhere for a seat cover for my 1978 Suzuki GS1000E and this is the closest to the original.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks, Steve

I put one of those on 1 '81 1000G. It was a very tight fit, but it looks great. I bouhgt it for my '78 1000E, but it didn't look right for that. Obviously, it looks great on Sedelen's bike.

I wouldn't care much if the heat stamped patersn wasn't perfect match as long as it looked good. I have installed several Sadlemen covers and don't like them that much. They have an extra half inch or so of foam under the cover. That makes the seat look all puffy, and its hard to put the silly chrome plastic trim strips on the seat with the extra thickness. I also don't care for the sewn pattern.

They work, and they are easy to install though. I think I have an extra brand new one, and also one I removed to install the Pit Replica that is still serviceable if anybody wants it for shipping cost. (from a 1000G/or '79-'81 850G)

OK Steve,
Right now they are in the process of making a '78 GS1000E stepped seat
cover, and they've been in the process for awhile. Hopefully soon they'll have it available, you could check with Chuck Hahn for status (poor guy's
been waiting for what must seem like years).
Anyway, you find them on E-bay, mine is a '79 GS1000E cover, and I wanted to have the gold lettering, so I asked that they do that for me and they did. You can contact them at pitreplica2@gmail.com, believe "TC" or something like that is the person you'll be dealing with.

Here's a seat cover like the one I bought.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SUZUKI-GS10...2555&pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

I know it says flat seat but it worked well on my stepped seat, think it's a mistake.

There are others on E-bay that are the exact same Pit Replica cover, but listed for in British pounds for about 51.60, I would contact Pit Replica and ask them about that, I mean they all ship from Thailand anyway, you might be able to get it for that price, or maybe you can just bid on that cover (I'd contact them first). If you want gold lettering you'll have to request that, otherwise you'll probably get white, which some people like, but it was gold that was the original color.

Just go to E-bay Motors, Parts, and type in "GS1000 Seat" and all kinds of stuff will pop up. Here's another picture of my seat from a different view just after I covered it, spent several hours to do it.

Here's the bike with the seat on it, that little blue micro fiber cloth protects the tank from chaffe marks, so if you see that, that 's what it is.
