I have a 1980 1100ET and I am going to but a 1168 kit in it. This will consist of new valve springs, new cams, new pistons, new rings and a set of adjustable cam sprockets. I have already replaced the Valve seals and have had it ported and polished. I want to do the work myself but am not sure how to tune my new Beast useing the new cams and adjustable cam sprockets. I also need a little info. on how much carb. work am I looking at. At this time I have the orginal airbox with a stage 1 jet kit and a V and H megaphone header. I want to go with the stage 3 jet kit and individual air pods. I am sure I will have to do a lot of adjusting so any information will be helpful.

For starters I'd timed it like the manual. TDC and both cam notchs facing each other. Once you get it running and the carbs sorted out than I'd go back in and degree the cams.

Jammin! 8)

I'll be watching your progress Greg. As you pass me :?

You should get some 36 Mikuni flatslides. Not sure about the stock carbs. You'll make more power with them.

Thanks for the info. I planned to follow the old spec. and hope for the best. As for the 36m Mukinui's at this time they are a little out of my price range. I plan to get a set but that will be down the road.

Keep an eye on Ebay. You should be able to pick up a set of RS's for about $300. If you ask me, the carbs alone offer more bang for the buck than anything else you can do.

I am not sure what RS's are. I am sure they are more than likely garbs but could you give me alittle more info. I would love to get a better set of carbs and any help is greatly apperciated.

THANKS FROM ME ON THAT ONE JAKE. 8O 8O :D

I pretty much did every thing you have done on my 83 GS 1100, and I got 36mm Mikuni's. The carbs are probably too large. I should have got the 34 mm. It is great to have the ability to get more fuel/air in, but if you don't have the correct exhaust, it just won't breath properly. I am limited to 104 HP at the rear wheel (dyno), and could probably get 8-15 more if I had high performance pipes. Obviously you need pods with the Mikuni's. These carbs are a breeze to work on. You can change the mains in 5 min. I have mine dialed in for 2600 foot elevation ( I live in central Alberta) and have one size up and down depending where I am going to do most of my riding. As far as the degree on the cams, I started with 107 intake and 109 exhaust. It is pretty much trial and error and alot of dyno time to get things perfect. I could probaly spread it out to 106 and 110 ( once I get my new pipes). The idea is to get as much time devoted to applying the explosive force to the piston, while allowing enough time for proper gas scavenging. There are so many things that will affect this and finding the correct balance is so important. A good tuner that has lots of experience with a dyno will be a great help.

What kind of pipes are you going with. I have a set of vance and hines megaphones. Are there any better.

1166 low compression piston. 36 Mikuni carbs. Stock head with stock valves and cams. Drag pipe with a good ignition made 128 HP. Bike ran 10.teens @ mid to upper 120's. I would think 34's would have been too small. I had to run the needles all the way up and one size up on the pilot. I think it was a 132 main jet with pod filters. Here is my best pass with that combination in the fall. Some really good cool air. http://media.putfile.com/gs1100++10adot11++128

Now I'm running 1166 kit, 1150 head, 325 lift megacycle cams. With the 36 Mikuni's the bike was running in the 9.80's. I went up to a set of 38 Mikuni's and immediately started running a bunch of passes in the 9.70's at 3100 Ft. DA. I think once the air gets better it should run some 9.60's. The 38's are a tad big. The bike will bog a bit if I put it on the 2-step too hard. When I ran the 36's on the bike stock pistons, head, cams with drag pipe and good ignition I made 113 HP. With the stock combination the 36's were doing the same thing. Bog the bike If I went WFO on the 2-step too fast.
