I bought a used sh-775 off a 2007 RZR for $33. including shipping on ebay. Pretty sure mine is letting bike overcharge battery. It does have a couple of fins broken off, wondering if that's going to effect anything. Had to bid quick yesterday since auction was over last night, figured worth the risk for the price.

What makes you think that it's over charging? Did you measure the battery voltage at idle and up to 5000 rpms?

Go here and do the quick test and report back your findings.

I think OP means that his current R/R is overcharging and he bought the SH-775 off fleabay last night as a replacement.

A couple of broken fins on the R/R should not affect it. That's assuming that the internals are in good working order.

Mine never feels hot.
Mounted where oil cooler would normally be, but still cool after a couple of min warming up with a high idle and bike stationary.

The impact needed to break a fin may be enough to damage the RR, probably ok though.
Would want to insure any cracks on the casing are properly filled though if it was mine.

Have fun mounting!:encouragement:

Affect, effect, infect... Seems to be all relative when it comes to a 30 year old GS electrical system.:p

Ok so I was no English major! Ha! I've had trouble with my volt meter on my bike having the 15 volt light lit, even at idle, which should indicate it's overcharging. But when testing it with my hand held digital it showed, key off-12.9, key on-12.4, idle-12.9, 2500-14.2, 5000-14.1, key off-12.9, so numbers looked pretty good. Took it for about a 30 mile ride yesterday on the highway and about half way home started running rough, tried to pull into a gas station and it died, battery was dead. Luckily I had put a spare in my saddlebag, switched out and got home safely. Battery seemed to be dragging a little when restarting once in my garage. Put battery on my charger (it has feature to tell you battery is not charging and there is a problem), which it did indicate. Tried charging second battery with same result. Figured r/r was letting system overcharge, since I had tested stator (stator papers test) several days before this and it was fine. So found the used sh-775 and went for it, wanted a series one anyway. It is the one which has broken fins. I know you are not suppose to, but took rubber cap off my sealed batteries today (nothing to lose) and one was very dry and second almost as bad. So looks like I was right r/r boiled out my batteries. Guess new battery is next.

Those number look like your charging system is doing just fine. 14.2V is not an over charge voltage. Unless you have an intermittent problem in the R/R, I'd say the R/R is working just fine. Over charging would boil a battery, but would also result in other issues like short bulb life as well. I would bet that something else is going on here or both batteries are not up to snuff.

I kind of wondered that too, but the meter on the bike showed I was overcharging, but then I can't imagine my digital meter not showing that also. So I will change out the r/r when I get it, at least I'll have a series one on the bike. Buy a new battery and see what happens. Think I might try to find a better spot for the r/r than under the battery box, somewhere with a little more air flow.

May I suggest an AGM battery this time? It should not have an issue with boiling out the acid.

What "light" are you using for charging indicator, and did you ever verify with your multimeter how accurate it is?

.

The meter on the bike is the kind that has small lights which light up to show what volt you're charging, and it "lights up" the 15 volt, which indicates overcharging. But when I used my digital meter I got the numbers listed above. I will try my hand held on one of my "cages" and try to verify it's working properly. Will check out AGM battery.

I bought a AGM battery a few years back.
Was a great investment for just 20-30 over what I was planning to pay for a regular battery.
My bike was in need of repairs last fall, winter and into spring pretty far.
During that time I was not able to ride.
Still a strong battery.
Definitely recommended!

My series RR never gets hot.
Under the battery box should be a fine placement.
Now after having it installed for a while I will be looking at moving mine from the oil cooler position and somewhere a bit less conspicuous.
My original RR was located under a side cover.
Never had the side cover for the bike though, would have been under if I had.
The original RR would get hot.
Not the case with the sh-775.
I thought I would need better air flow when installed so I put it up front.
Now I know better.
The mounting holes are wider then the original.
Also the space needed for the sh-775 is larger then what I have in the original location.

Thanks for the advise. Turns out one of the batteries was an interstate AGM, a little over a year old. It was dry when I took sealed rubber top off and took a look (like I said not suppose to, but wanted to see inside). I'll just keep the r/r under battery box if I can get sh-775 to fit with some modifications.

VERY little necessary in the way of "modifications", Terry.

I just mounted one on my 850, along with replacing the fuse box.

Can't see much from this angle, but the 775 is mounted below the battery box, along with the Triumph connectors.

Here is a shot from what would be the back of the bike, so you can the extent of the "modifications".

Yep, that's it, just tilt the R/R down a bit. Just bolt it in place, then twist hard to get it that way.

It gets a bit cozy when the fuse box is installed, but even more crowded when wires are installed, too.
Saving the 'wired' picture for later, but here is how it fits with the fuse box installed:

Mounted one on my 850 and my 1000. In both cases it was mounted under the battery box. The only modifications needed was to every so slight elongate the holes inward on the R/R. Other then that it bolted straight up. Removing the battery box does make it go easier. If you unscrew everything that's bolted to it, the box just lifts out leaving everything hanging. Only takes a few minutes and gives you a good chance at sprucing it up a bit.

Thanks guys and thanks for the pictures Steve, looks good, which all my electrical stuff looked that neat, something to work on. Already have battery box out waiting for r/r, got new coat of paint while waiting. Ordered a new AGM battery so hopefully this weekend I can be riding again!

I wish mine looked that neat, too. Here is the first mock-up of wiring for the additional fuse locations:

I finished up wiring the fuse box area last night. It was late, I did not get any pictures, but will do so before going much further.
It is now a considerably "busier" location now.

Now I am working on the stuff 'downstream' of the fusebox. You know, all the "farkles".

You know what farkles are?
