Shim Removal

My manual shows a picture of a shim being removed by pulling it toward the center of the engine.

I've found this method of removal next to impossible. I've found it much less frustrating to pop the shim out of the tappet and slide it under the cam shaft away from the center of the engine for removal.

I guess that depends on what you are calling "the center of the engine". To me, that is toward the cam chain. Using a shim tool, that would be near impossible to do. The only way I have found to remove the shims is to slide them toward the other cam. Is that what you mean by center?

Yes, by 'center of the engine' I mean toward the other cam.

I found it much easier to slide the exhaust side shims under the cam toward the front of the bike to remove them, and to slide the intake valve shims under the cam toward the rear of the bike to remove them.
