DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

What should I expect to pay for that at a shop..there is a good one in town and its not a main dealer shop

way too much. do it yourself, learn a bit about your bike and spend the cash on something else........

Probably a lot, if they were even willing to do it. You can do the valves yourself for a couple dollars in like an hour.

Post up where you are and what you ride. There is probably someone here not too far from you that would be willing to come over and assist you.

I'm of the opinion that old bikes like ours are best owned by do it yourselfers, or rich people. 30+ year old bikes need lots of maintenance.

You might end up paying shop rates for an hour or more for somebody to just scrape off a hardened cam cover gasket and not even adjust your valves if they are all ok.

Scraping off an old gasket might be boring but it's not difficult.

well what are the symptoms when they are out? its got 16k on it

Don't wait for the symptoms. You need to check the clearances. It can be too late when you start getting symptoms - loads of these bikes fell by the wayside because the valve clearances weren't checked.

Agreed and Opinion

Agreed and Opinion

I'm of the opinion that old bikes like ours are best owned by do it yourselfers, or rich people. 30+ year old bikes need lots of maintenance.

That's why I bought my second "T"...so I can perform a breakdown of each component and learn from my mistakes.

I was lucky in that initally my "T" was in the shop and I know the owner; he worked on my first bike (Y2K Gixxer750) and I spent about $500 in 6 months. (Money well spent IMO)

It cost me roughly $300 to get my "T" road-worthy...again, money well-spent since I was in a bind at home with my bike. (Personal matter)

So roughly $800 in maintenance but like Nessism said, rich people who like to spend $$. I don't consider myself rich but some would not spend what I did but that's why we're all different.

EDIT: OP--do the clearance yourself and with a little bit of confidence, you'll be fine. Also, if you haven't done so, put your location/bike in your signature. Just goto USER CP and update.

I found a local guy that is suppose to be good, said he would come to my house and do it and I could watch charge me 100.00

so someone mentioned an hour to do a valve job, and a couple of bucks...

and you want to fork over 100 bucks for an hours work....hmmmmm

I would suggest you try and do the work and if you find your getting nowhere with it, then call in for some help....

give it a shot at least....

no you didn't mention the hour....Toasty mentioned it...earlier

most of the guys are suggesting to you to at least try and give it a shot, it's the best way to learn and to know for future items that need to be done....

I don't do everything either, but I do try to do things on my own first one has to at least give it a shot, sometimes one can surprise ones self...

Is he only going to work on the carbs? I hope he is bringing a bunch of shims with him to adjust the valves. Or is he just going to check to see if they are within spec?

Btw we don't mean to give you a hard time. Paying someone to do it for you is fine but most of the time shops don't know how to work on older bikes, and you end up paying a fortune doing all the little maintenance things these old bikes need.
