    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Should my valves and cylinders look like this?

I thought a couple of the exhaust valves looked a little weird. Am I just being paranoid?

I just got the cylinders off and started degreasing the outside when I noticed that a couple of the cylinders look a little more than cruddy.

Looks like it is time for a rebuild. No they should not look like that. Looks like a bore job , over sized pistons and rings , and new valves and seats are probably in order looking at those valves. Might be cheaper to find a good used head , and cylinders with pistons. Then just hone the cylinders and throw some new rings in it, hand lap valves and replace valve seals

Looks like that engine sat for a while and had some water in the cylinders.

As for the valves, any chance you checked clearances before taking things apart?
I would guess clearance was a bit less than minimum on the cruddy valves.

I did not check the valve clearances.

I do have another head and cylinder set. There's probably no chance of pulling the valves out of the other head and using it with his head, is there? The problem with the other head is that it has 6 exhaust bolts stuck in it. Machine shop here wants $60 an hour to do it. I already had them do that with this head for one bolt.

The other shoulder set doesn't have that crudiness inside. It's just pretty dirty on the outside.. also the other valves don't have that mushroom look to them.
 
If the heads are for the same engine, then there is no reason you couldn't pull the valves and reuse them in the other head. You'll have to lap the valves at the very least. The lapping pattern will tell you if you need to do anything else.
 
I pulled the valves out of the second head this evening and they look great. I also pulled the cylinders and pistons. I have the pistons soaking in some chem dip.

One of the cylinders on the second head has something similar, though nowhere near as bad. The first set, shown above, were pretty bad, you could feel the corrosion.

This is the only cylinder with the discoloration, and it is not bad enough that you can feel it.

What do you think?
