Side Stand Operation

Sounds bloody dangerous to me to have to go through all that, what happens if your bro stalls halfway through a manouver like starting across a cross roads or traffic lights with a great big wagon bearing down on him? Instead of snatching in the clutch and thumbing the starter he's got to kick the stand down and up too?
I agree, if you stall out on incline , you want to get moving asap

I appreciate your guys responses.

At this time the bike is balanced on the center stand and wood blocks. Got the side stand jammed up. Gonna take a few days.

I'm working on tires, bearings. brakes, etc.

A bunch of stuff that I would blow off if I was the only rider.

To those that have followed this thread, thank you. Even though I think that everything is safe. I'm still going to try and figure out what the deal is with the sidestand switch.

Please, if you haven't, or don't want to read the whole thread. Don't reply. I'm old and it hurts my brain trying to figure some responses out. It's not you, it's me.

i just read your post and it sounds a lot like my 83 GS1100GL.
Side stand light on/ stand in up position
OIl light on
New Battery
clutch in
in nuetral
still does not turn starter over.
I will check all my ground wires.

Thanks for the information

Can you take a picture of the side stand and switch, both in the up and down position ? and post please..

.

I think we have different issues. The bike I'm working on cranks and starts with the side stand up. It used to only work with the side stand down (actually it wasn't completely down, it was almost down). I adjusted the side stand switch. I'm still trying to figure out what's going on.

The guys here tell me that the side stand does nothing but turn the warning light on and off, from the factory. I've studied every wiring diagram from any bike that looked close to mine, and I have to agree. I've also studied the wiring on the bike. So far all I can say is, it's pristine. Except for my butchery.

I have examined every connector, every wire. Except the wires that are hidden by factory appearing black tape. I won't disturb that.

Anyways Randy52,

There's a lot more knowledgeable dudes here than I.

I will help you as much as I can.

We all love Sue Zuki. Life ain't easy for a bike named Sue.

I forgot to mention the saftey switch was also out of adjustment so i took care of that also.

I'm beginning to think this needs to be plastered in big bold letters somewhere for all the new owners/wrenchers.

The side stand light will be on whenever the key is on the and engine is off or not producing oil pressure.

Please note side stand position is not part of the above equation. Simplified logic is when the oil light is ON the side stand light WILL be ON.

Ok I get it now, thanks. There must be other reasons for it not starting.

If you have a test light or multimeter, checking if you got power coming from the start button at the solenoid is a start. If you do and it doesn't click then checking to make sure your solenoid is grounded is next.

When you jumped the solenoid it was across the two lugs I assume. Have you tried jumping battery positive to the solenoid wire that comes from the start button/switch?

Also it goes without mention you should always troubleshoot electrical systems with a charged and healthy battery.

Sidestand Mystery Solved

Sidestand Mystery Solved

I finally got back around to my weird side stand issue. It was a ground wire that was supposed to be connected directly to the battery. It was somewhat hidden and I missed it before, stupid mistake. As soon as I saw it, I knew. It's strange because the light worked properly but the thing wouldn't crank unless the stand was in a place that apparently completed the missing ground circuit. It could be adjusted so that place was up or down.

I was convinced that it was a previous evil doer but it was my error all along.

well, the only way my bike would start was if i did not pull the clutch lever, someone wired it backwards. once i fixed that it started right up. now i need to do some routine maintenance since the bike has been sitting for a while. thanks for all your help.

Your sluggish starter could also be a sluggish starter, from all the sitting. rust between the armature and magnets, stiff bearings, bad brushes, etc. Also, check your voltage from the starter switch to the solenoid. The starter button may need to cleaned. Watch out for the little tiny parts that like fly out!

I'm pretty sure that the clutch switch can't be wired backwards. I could be wrong. My confidence level is awe inspiring, huh?

I wouldn't be surprised if you had a ground problem too. Maybe by playing around you inadvertently fixed it.

Have you tried switching back again?

Just curious. Best of luck to you.
