    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Sidestand switch circuit question

Hi, I used the search engine and found some valueable information, but the threads I found didn't address the issue I'm in right now, so I'll ask.... SORRY if it's been covered, and I didn't find it....

82 gs850g, sidestand switch.

My switch had a nicely burned wire, so I removed it. Don't really need it, it's a nice feature, but not vital to the operation of the bike. OR SO I THOUGHT. My R/R is fried, and now I can't help to think that the switch, as it's connected to that danged diode, is somehow related to the charging? This one puzzles me to no end. I'm not sure what measurement I should be getting from the switch, but I can get it to "close" by pushing in the plunger and my meter goes to infinite, as I expect it should. (on ohms) However, I can't get a stable measurement out of this switch, my meter seems to jump around quite a bit. Sorry for being a D.A., but what scale should I be using? I've not found this information anywhere.

My rectifier is nice and toasted. Following the Stator Papers fault finding guide was simple, and getting a gently used R/R is easy, too. But do I really need this switch? Quite a puzzle.

Any information is appreciated.:)

No, it's not related to the charging issue you have.

whatever scale you are on is fine. 2k or less is the best.
it will read open or closed depending on the plunger position. what you are seeing is the result of dirty switch contacts

No... mine was broken for the longest time.

Rustybronco, thanks for the response! I was hoping that the R/R failure wasn't related to the switch, frankly. I just didn't make sense, but when you're troubleshooting, don't leave out the most recent repair or removal, right?

The R/R going bad could be a number of things, and shoot, I've got plenty of time on my hands to sort it out. Could be a bad solder joint, could be another rubbed though jacket on a wire somewhere. Just takes time to find it.

I concur, your sidestand switch is not necesary for happy operation of your r/r.

When we got my wife's 850L, it did not have a sidestand switch at all. The bike charged just fine, the only 'problem' was that the light never came on when the sidestand was down. It took a while to find a switch, now that is workking fine, too, with no change in the charging.

Oh, "that danged diode" to which you refer, ... that is only connected to the sidestand switch and the oil pressure switch, it has nothing to do with charging.
