Hello all,

I've been putting a '82 1100 GL back together for the past three years when I have the time. This summer it is finally registered and on the road.. or was. Took it to the beach the other day and it died on me. After trucking it home and doing some electrical troubleshooting I have determined the issue to be the signal generator/ignitor.

First issue is I can't get the bolt holding the governor out. It occurred to me that this bolt may be 'reverse threaded' due to its spinning nature? Probably not but I just wanted to double check with you guys. If not then it is truly stuck. The soft metal of the governor quickly stripped and I am at a loss on how to remove it. Any suggestions?

Second issue is I that I think the ignition system deteriorated over the past couple of weeks in correlation with the engine getting to peak temperatures. The engine gets really hot and most of my issues occurred when it was hottest. I don't want to throw another ignition system in there just for it to fail again. Would a dyna s system be susceptible to these same temperatures?

Thanks,
TH

your bike probably didn't like the hoard of black flies at beach. Anyways, how did you determine that your signal coils are faulty? Mine's not left hand threaded, ; does yours have allen head style bolt? Have you tried PB blaster or similar- maybe someone used locktite on it long ago.

As far as heat goes, your ignitor might be a problem- these engines do get hot but it's not usually a problem. Did you check for spark when it failed to start after getting toasty?

Hey thanks for getting back to me.

No black flies yet, thank god, so we can rule that one out. It is an allen bolt and I've been PB blasting it for a couple of days now. When the bike broke down first thing I checked was spark and there was none across all cylinders. Usually this problem resolved itself after the engine cooled but when checked the day after- still no spark. The signal generator failed the tests provided by my manual (measuring resistance across blue and green) and so did the ignitor. Pretty certain that's the issue as the ignition coil tests came back ok.

My signal coil setup is a little different than yours- only two wires ( a blue and a green) come out and plug into ignitor. how many wires on yours?
Since you can't get a grip on the knob/governor, did you try putting in gear to lock crankshaft?

There are four wires- green, blue, black and yellow. Tried putting it in gear and of course that worked (why didn't I think of that) but now the allen head is stripped. Screw extractor won't bite and I really am stuck now.

Can't you get a vice-grip (end on) on the head to remove it? allen headed bolts tend to be real hard, but real vice grips are even harder.

nope. The governor extends past the bolt and 'shields' its head. I'm giving up before I create any more problems and taking it to my local shop. Hopefully they will have more luck. Thanks for your help though.

Does anyone know if the DS3-2 system would work with this bike? It has is an electronic advancer and I was told by Dynatek on the phone that I would need to get a mechanical advancer off of another bike. I'm happy to do that but I'm not sure which model would have it and if it's compatible with my bike.

I also have a 1982 gs1100gl and I am replacing the signal generator with a DS3-2 system. I have the same problem with the stripped governor, how did you remove the allen head bolt?? and is that bolt common thread or reverse thread??

Do you have any tips or advice for the DS3-2 install??

Thank you
