Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Silly Oil Myths...

Let's hear them.

Here's one I actually heard a while ago:

Squished up bananas in the differential will lubricate better than gear oil alone.

Synthetic oil is not slicker than Dino oil.
Synthetic oil doesn't cool an engine better than Dino oil.
Synthetic oil doesn't make more horsepower than Dino oil.
Crisco oil is better than synthetic oil.

It is no Myth that Crisco oil is better than synthetic.
Have you ever tasted synthetic oil on french fries?

Then their is the grocery store dare.
Looked dazed in the section that has the oils and then get a clerk and ask him\her what they think is best for a Mazola party.

You get an uncomfortable stare. It creeps them out for some reason.

Scrape the sweat off your dog(s) every time they sweat. A quart of dog sweat is about equal to 7 gallons of dino oil.

Let's hear them.

The basis for this one is an old unscrupulous car seller trick. It doesn't lubricate better but it quiets the noise of a badly worn differential long enough to pass it off on some unsuspecting buyer.Sawdust was also used for this purpose. I actually had forgotten about this one.Hadn't heard of this con since the 70's.(Guess I've been around the used car biz TOO long!)

I knew sawdust was sometimes used to make them quiet, the bananas part seems to fit this idea too.
Thanks!

Hell the sawdust trick in "The Grapes of Wrath"
Good old Steinbeck.

Synthetic oil is not slicker than Dino oil.
Synthetic oil doesn't cool an engine better than Dino oil.
Synthetic oil doesn't make more horsepower than Dino oil.
.

Funny. Each of these sited "myths" is actually true, or at least true to the point that only a laboratory could measure the differences.

More myths...

Synthetic oil causes oil leaks
Synthetic oil will cause my clutch to slip
Synthetic oil will keep my rings from seating (on a fresh rebuild)
You should either use synthetic or mineral oil, not mix the two
Once you start using one particular type of oil, you should stay with it forever
It doesn't matter what kind of oil is used as long as it's changed often enough

SYNTHETIC OIL
Beware of synthetic oil, it can do terrible things to you and your beloved motorcycle. It will not only leak out of your engine faster than you can put it in, but it will also cause your oil filter to clog and implode, dumping debris and dirt into your lubrication system. It also will make every part of your bike permanently slippery because of its linear molecular chain dispersion action. Then it will leak onto your kickstand causing it to retract automatically, dropping your bike on the ground! But that's not all...

Synthetic oil will round off your gears and spin your bearings. It will also splatter onto your seat causing your girlfriend to fall off in the apex of a turn and she'll never ride with you again. Synthetic oil coats your sight window and your timing window with a whitish pro-emulsification additive that is both non-removable and highly corrosive. Synthetic oil will completely leak onto the ground overnight and your dog will drink it and die.

Synthetic oil will wear out your tires and make your battery leak. It will give you the desperate need to urinate after you put your full leathers on and then jam your zippers shut. It will contaminate your gasoline causing your bike to stall on railroad tracks and accelerate uncontrollably near police cars. It will make it rain during rallies and on weekends. It will lubricate your timing belts causing them to jump teeth and break your valves to bits. Synthetic oil chemically weakens desmodromic valves and causes the clearances to change every six miles. Then it melts the black soles of your riding boots right before you walk across your new carpeting.

While riding past groups of attractive women it will cause both of your handlebar grips to slip off at the same time so you smash your windscreen with the bridge of your nose. It also causes your swingarm to crack, your studs to break, and your rotors to warp, and then it voids your warranty by changing your odometer reading to 55,555. It also dries out your wet-clutch and wets your dry-clutch. It makes your clutch slave-cylinder seal fail in the heaviest traffic on the hottest day of the year while putting an angry wasp in your helmet for good measure.

Synthetic oil hides your 13mm socket and puts superglue on your earplugs. Synthetic oil will scratch your faceshield and make your gloves shrink two sizes night before trackday. Synthetic oil stole your neutral and sold it to the Chinese for $1.25. Synthetic oil will make you grow a tail. Synthetic oil will write long crazy e-mails to your Internet friends and then sign your name at the bottom!

Well, I do know this: Synthetic oil WILL steal all the cash out of your wallet... I saw it do it with my own two eyes. :D

No one ever answered my myth or plausible question in the other thread though?

Can changing your oil too often be potentially damaging to your engine??

Could wear out your drain plug threads, but that's about it.

SYNTHETIC OIL..............
 LOL alot! :D

Synthetic oil can reduce the electrical resistance of anything it touches to zero causing instant meltdown and fusing together of all electronic components and cabling in a motorcycle wiring loom.

Very true ... Good Friend runs a oil lab ... You would be shocked at the info we has come up with ... Things like we test all sorts of oil ...Did you know Mobil 1 oil is never the same make up each year we test it ... ?

Synthetic oils a scam....... Did I say that ....

Its all about the CAFE law and other "gas mileage laws" look it up ... I bet no one here has ever herd of the CAFE Law ... No one ever does ...

I could go on for hours how the CAFE law governs all things about a modern vehicle...Big lies in the oil and vehicle world ...Its all about MPG ..Smog .. And BIG profits ...

Don't forget vehicle makers are not your friend ...A 70 Chev truck is a mistake in the vehicle makers point of view .........Why .......?

Its still here and running 30 plus years later ..The vehicle makers are not going to have that happen again they dont make any money when vehicles last and people dont buy new ones ...

Flame away....And keep drinking the synthetic oil kool-ad scam.... Or put Dino oil in change it when you should ..And put the money saved in your kids collage fund or the wife a nice night out for dinner ...

Theirs no "need" for the snake oil...

(Now dont forget I'm a mechanic that was entrenched in the racing/fab world with 30 plus year doing it with a engineering degree to boot...Not a plumber or IT guy buying the BS there trying to sell us ...Not putting down plumbers or IT people OR anyone at all .. Dad was a plumber and I wish my IT skills were better... I will NOT warranty my gear work and gear box work if its had snake oil in it ....)

Wrong Mr. lubrication impaired. :p

Daniel

So if we built an "octagon" (can we use that or is it trademarked by the UFC??) and took bets, but with all the proceeds going to Frank and the GSR fund, would you guys totally rumble in it over this for our entertainment?
