    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I picked up this skunk tail (thanks Frank) in the hopes of using the chrome piece on my S project. The tail is in great shape with the exception of the underside bolts snapped off.

The chrome piece has some visible cracking, at a certain angle, under the top plastic coating.

After looking at in person, I am going to have to agree with many comments I read about these chrome pieces being ugly and useless. But, they did come with the bike.

So, if any one has had any luck removing/restoring this piece, please let me know?

If not, this tail can be up for grabs.

the tail piece has a lip around the underside of it that retains the chrome trim. first you need to remove the two clips off the ends, then starting on one end, carefully roll the trim off the tail piece starting from the painted outside and working towards the inside. ***now that I think more about it, I rolled it off the other end as well before removing it from the top surface. (sorry, it's been a while since I removed it.)

the inner 'trunk' is pop riveted to the outer section. drill out the rivets and you can separate the two pieces.

I have a spare trunk with good, but a bit rusty, studs on it.

It might be possible to drill and tap the broken stud m6 and put a bolt through instead.
 
I think I have an inner box to replace the one with a broken stud. Just use pop rivets to attach like Suzuki did.

I think that's one of the "better" trim pieces I've seen. I don't know about ugly, but I do think they're useless. Once you get a really nice looking and newly repainted tail piece, it's when you go to put that trim ring on and look at it the wheels will start spinning in your head, should I, or shouldn't I? I decided I can always put that back on at a later day, so I left it off, indefinitely. :lol:
 
As a whole, the tail is in really nice shape. My only interest in it was the chrome piece.

In the third picture you can see the small cracks on the chrome piece. They are below the protective coating.

Unless there is a method to restore that piece, I will probably not risk breaking it and see if anyone here needs it.

They do get brittle, and one of mine cracked removing it. You might do better with aftermarket door trim if it is flexible enough to make those two almost 90 degree turns.
 
Same thing happened with mine when i tried to remove it.
It was too brittle and the trim itself stayed intact but the "plastic" coating cracked and chipped.
 
The one for my S was cracked and broken, too. I super glued it back together, sanded it smooth and painted it gloss black. It matches the S paint scheme nicely and gives the tail section a nice finished look.
 
I had tried taking a piece of chrome stripping someone had sent me..maybe Sedelen.and putting it in boiling water to soften it in an attempt to form it around the corners. It did go on, but theres a few problems. First it cools and gets stiff very quickly and secondly, the chrome will spider web inside the sheathing. Im not gonna add anything to the tails either. Larrys paint is just too nice to cover and I like the clean look better anyway.

I may consider it IF and ONLY IF i can find some really good examples and the end tabs..short of that, they will stay plain.

I have one trim that doesn't look too bad, if I only had those little end pieces I might put mine back on, but I want to see how yours turns out before I even think about it.
 
sedelen, you can have a couple of those end pieces if you need them.

Well Dale, I had a change of heart. I didn't want you to be the only one out there riding around with that little ugly faded trim ring on your otherwise what's gonna be a museum quality Skunk. So, I put mine back on! Many thanks to Dan (7981GS) for providing me the two little itty bitty end clips (NLA) What do you think? with or without? Before you answer, they're not coming off!

Here's the before pic. It think it looks great without it.
