    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Sloppy airbox boots

I just put new carb boots on my '81 750L. Man, reinstallation was a breeze! Problem is I can't get the airbox boots to fit snugly on the carbs. After riding for a few minutes, a 1/16" to 1/8" gap opens up on the bottoms of the two inner carbs and the outers look kind of stretched. It almost acts as if the carbs are sagging. Would wedging something between the airbox & frame serve to safely push the airbox forward?
 
If they aren't snug, some part is wrong, and it's probably the boots. Boots and clamps are required. Go to Bike Bandit or to Alpha Sports and use their parts fiches on-line to (1) see how everything fits together (2) identify the correct parts.
 
I've had similar difficulty on my GS650GL.

1) Loosen everything, including the single clamp at the BACK of the airbox.

2) get a friend or jam something behind the airbox to push it as far forward as possible, <and hold it there until everything's tightened>.

3) Tighten the 4 intake clamps and the 4 front airbox clamps

4) last, push the rear airbox <boot> as far forward as possible and tighten. This will keep the airbox from trying to pull off the carbs.

Thanks, everybody! I hadn't noticed any angle to the airbox ones but that makes sense. Hope I didn't stretch them too much already. I'll tear it down again this weekend and try to snug them up. And Spchips, thank you for that step-by-step! :)

one change, that I wanted to clear up.

when the airbox is pushed forward, it can not be released until everything is tightened.
