A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I'm mentioning this here, now, because I've yet to be able to take a look at my sons 1978 gs1000e. He described to me last night over phone, that there was smoke coming from under the tank after he took the bike out for about 20 miles for the first time in several months (It's 70's in Chicagoland!) Sounded like it could be a detached breather hose to me, however I'm not ruling out a slight gas leak around the petcock area. I have some photos he sent me that show where the smoke is coming from under the tank. Seems to only be coming from the left side.

I rode the bike earlier before the smoke and I didn't notice anything, but after he rode it for awhile longer the smoke started rolling out once he stopped the bike. He said the bike ran fine and the smoke didn't affect the way it was running.

Any ideas before I take a look at it on Friday?

There is a large plug about mid-way under the tank that likes to melt.
Several people here have posted pic's.
Check ALL of the connectors under the tank and clean them!
Then apply Dielectric grease to the connections.
It may be too late and you will have to replace that plug if it is melted together. :(
Either way... CLEAN ALL OF THE CONNECTIONS!

Anyone have a picture of the rubber plug? I would be able to tell what's going on until Friday and I'd like to get an idea of what I'm dealin' with prior to starting.

It's a plastic squareish plug and it shouldn't be hard to find as it is dead center under the tank and black from burning/melting. :(

Sorry, I miss-typed seat instead of TANK.
It WILL, unfortunately, be obvious. :(

Pull off the gas tank and find the source. Could be the breather hose pulled off.
