A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So I got a stock filter box installed today...

I taken the exhaust off 3 times now, no probs. (I replace the oil pan gasket)

I'm pretty sure my bike doesn't have manifold o-rings, just boots.

That explains what I'm hearing from the exhaust then.

If you don't have those clamps on your carb boots it'll suck sir around them and that will also cause back popping when you close the throttle.

No intake manifold O-rings just the tubes and clamps like the 1100 4-valve engines.

I have not actually taken the carbs off yet but the boots appear to be in good shape, I can squeeze them and feel that they are pliable

Check for cracks under the clamps and where they cut into the rubber. ;)

The rubber boots on your bike are 30 years old, if they have never been replaced just do it now. I'm doing it on my bike rehab now and my boots have been changed out though about 13 years ago. They have started to harden up and have developed some cracking as well again. I'm changing out the air box boots as well.

I am very interested in this post. Getting ready to put airbox onto my '81 GS650 GX. PO did not jet bike and had pods on it. Hope you are able to be riding soon Crage! I noticed that my idle was barely cracked open for the current setup (with pods)

Well I've finally gotten around to pulling the carbs. The intake boots appear to be fine. I'm pretty sure they have been replaced, as they are all 4 soft and pliable. The carb to airbox boots, on the other hand, are hard as rocks on the bottom ends of them. It seems that gas has hardened them on the bottoms. I'm going to try boiling them, if this does not revive them I'll be ordering new ones.

The carbs didn't appear to be very dirty inside. There was quite a bit of crud in the main jet though. They have definetely been pulled apart before, I had little to no issues getting any screws, jets, or seats out. I could also see that screw drivers had been used on the slots before.

Anyways I'm giving them all a 24 hour soak so I know I'm starting at ground 0 with them. Carb #1 is on soak now!
