    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Soft front brake

The front brake on my 450 is quite a bit softer than those on the 750. There's considerably more lever travel before the pads bite. It's not unsafe, just disconcerting.

I've bled the system, and completely replaced the fluid with new DOT4. Rebuilt the master cylinder and inspected the caliper. The pads have less than 1000 miles.

About the only thing I can think of is that the hose is just old, and needs replaced, preferably with braided steel. Anyone have any tips before I go this route?
 
I think you have ansered your own question. Replace the brake line. It may be bulging internally causing the soft feel
 
You may still have air in it....try a speed bleeder like a mini vac and then you will know for sure

My guess is that you still have air in the system. A trick I learned is to remove the master cylinder cover and gently tap on the brake lever. do this rapidly over and over and in just a few minutes little air bubbles will start surfacing. It's boring but in about 5 minutes, your brake lines should be free of all air. Hope that helps! :wink:

One other thing you can try is while you're squeezing the brake lever ,have a firm grip on part of the brake line itself. If it seems to bulge then its probably the culprit. In theory there's supposed to be replaced every 4 years or so although they do last a lot longer.

Braided steel lines are a nice alternative, just be mindful of cable routing and wrap them to prevent them chafing any bodywork.
