A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello all,

I picked up my first bike a few weeks ago, shes an 82' GS850G. Got her for $1000 off craigslist. Since i didn't want to drop it or embarrass my self, i bought her by only seeing her run. She sounded good to me, and even though i found a few flaws i have fallen in love.

Anyway more to the point, the gauges half work. The tac and speedo seam to be close in what they display however the mileage and gas gauge do not work. No mileage spins and the gas gauge is stuck at 1/4 tank. Any thoughts on where to start looking?

Thanks!
Kimo

Some sellers are picky about letting a prospective buyer test ride- but a buyer should never be.. At the very least, you should have hopped on as passenger and observed noises, lights , etc.. $1000 is still alot to pay when you are confronting an unknown bike.
The problems you describe seem easily fixable, but be prepared to spend some hours doing that. Playing catchup on maintenance will be alot easier, thanks to Basscliff's work.

Much appreciated. I understand i am a newbie at owning a bike, and i knew with my budget i would be getting somthing that might or might not be in good condition. I am familar with engines and i tend to be a jack of all master of non type of guy. I can do most of the little things, but i will leave the rebuilds and carb tuning to the pros. Which is where i have my bike right now, they are doing a once over and fixing some of the obvious stuff.

Thanks again all, i hope i represent the GS community well.

If you wanna know how "the pro's" do it, just go to my driveway.
I've got a camaro sitting there with $5000 of documented work, from a local shop, by the previous owner.
(the Previous owner left me this paperwork)

I just got done ripping this car apart....NONE of this work was done! At all!
Every single ****ing part they "replaced", is actually still 15 year old factory parts.....completely untouched.

These were regular maintenance parts, not a performance build.

... i will leave the rebuilds and carb tuning to the pros. Which is where i have my bike right now, ...

i hope i represent the GS community well.
If you keep taking that bike to repair shops, we'll revoke your GSR card.

.

woah..... ok

I live in Portland OR, guess i will be getting a crash course in self maintence then.

Put location in profile and bike in sig.

We can help you fix all the stuff your pro will screw up.

hope i did this right...

Looks good so far

Read thru the BassCliff site for most of the mainetenance issues you'll be faced with

Hope you budgeted some extra cash for repairs and maintenance on a 30 year old bike, even doing it yourself

Ok, i have looked through the forums and on BassCliff's website reguarding the odometer. I think i have to replace the whole thing but wanted to check with any to see if my thinking is ok.

The speedometer works just fine as far as i can tell, but the odometer and trip odometer do not roll an inch. I have seen others with this problem and the answer seams to be total instrument display replacement.

Thoughts?
