    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Well I did today! Had a real hard time getting the pilot jet out of #2 for my carb rebuild. I don't know what the heck, but #1 was bad and this one was worse. There doesn't appear to be any head on these things at all. My smallest extractor wouldn't work, so I went to the next one up which was getting real close to the diameter of the pilot jet hole. I did get it out, but it was close! :shock:

Funny Clint..I mean Chef! I was definately getting a little nervous near the end of that one. To make it more tense, I had my 5 yr old daughter hanging off of me while I'm trying to get it out. She keeps asking me if it's out yet and wants to see. Am I the only one that's had a bad time getting these pilot jets out? Is there some secret to them I'm not aware of? I still got two to go and hope my luck hasn't run out! :-D
 
Did you try heat on the carb body? Helps to soften the varnish/glue. Worked wonders on my VM's when the slides wouldn't budge. Worth a try.
 
Exact same thing happened to me this weekend! Disassembling the #1 carb for dipping and could not get the pilot jet out. Finally buggered it well enough so the screwdriver wouldn't bite. So I had to drill the jet and use a bolt extractor. It worked! But man, I was sweating bullets drilling that jet!

Wow, a screw extractor actually worked? What's the board record now, 1 for 4300?

I've had good luck with screw extractors on master cylinder cap screws... 2 for 2 so far!
 
I had to file down my screwdriver to fit tightly without being too wide (either way) then I put it in and made sure it was straight and using a tack hammer (not the BFH!) gave it a couple of light taps to break the varnish. this with WD-40 and carb cleaners soaking it made the next three come out like a dream (don't ask about that first one, but I see you don't need to!) \\:D/

Congrats on your good luck! I've had good and bad luck with them. They've been good to me lately and hope my luck holds out! :-D

I think I'll give the next 2 a good soak in PB Blaster. That's a good idea. I don't think there is much of a head on mine to work with as it seemed someone already boogered them up before I got the bike. By the way, is that your bike covered in snow in your avatar? :shock:

Hey Cory. It's sounding like this is a common thing! The smallest extractor worked on my first one. Then on the second one, it seemed the bottom just fell out of the pilot and I went to the next one up which was very nerve wracking. I got a reprieve so I'm on to #3!

sounds like everything is going pretty good for you! Knock on wood. Good luck with number 3. I just finished rebuilding, and cleaning my carbs with the Berryman's and Robert Barr's O-ring kits, let me know if you have any questions. I will be putting my carbs onto the bike sometime this week hopefully. I will start a thread and post some pictures on here of the bike, put back together.

A regular drill bit will be tightening the jet even more as you drill it. A left hand bit will be heating it, vibrating it, & trying to loosen it all at the same time. I broke the slot off a pilot jet in one of my 1100 E carbs, & while drilling it with a left hand bit, the bit grabbed the jet & spun it out

That's why you need to use a bolt extractor bit. It is different than a regular bit and a left hand bit. Though the left hand bits are nice, they aren't made of the same material or look like the bolt extractor bits. These work the best!

Cory, I think rphillips is referring to my predrilling before I put the extractor in. He is right; I probably did tighten it even more with my drill bit prior to using the extractor. I didn't really think about that at the time. :-D
 
Hi there Chuckster. As a guy who makes a living turning wrenches, I'll just say that there's no shame in "having luck"! (I accept any 'n all "luck" that happens.....gratefully ;)
Often referred to as an Easy-Out (I suspect that was a brand at one time), ANY screw extractor I've taken to calling "Lucky-Outs"


I'm further impressed with WHAT you used.......over the years I've all but given up on helical screw extractors as I find that they usually: 1. break......or 2. expand the piece that you're trying to extract - making that an impossible job.
I see one mention of using heat on the carb body.....Just for those uninitiated readers digging out their small butane torches (or worse!).....remember that gasoline was in these castings........and fumes usually lurk within recesses and porous voids that can and will surprise you at the worst times - Bad bad JUJU.

Hey Sparks, thanks for the response. I generally haven't had that much luck with them either, but glad it came through for me. It was about the only tool in my garage that could help me at that point, so I went with it. I was using the smaller extractor at first and it was flexing to the point that I was scared it would break (as usual) and then I would be done. Game over. I don't think I damaged the jet hole wall with the extractor as it was barely grazing it, but I'll have to check it tonight when I pull it out of the dip from it's 2 day stay.

Great point about the torch, heat, etc. and the carb. Personally I wouldn't want to try it with mine, but I appreciate the help and suggestions.

How are you liking the '07 Bonnie? Nice bike! :-D
