Speedo Calibration 85 vs 140 mph

I just purchaced a new set of gauges and did not know myself that Suzuki had so many different tach and speedo combinations. My 82 has the 85 speedo and 9k tach. The set I just got (yr.unknown)has the 140 speedo but with a 9k tach also. Is that common? The set i just got was supposed to not have been dissassembled or messed with. Seeing that all of your 140 mph speedos have the 9.5k tachs makes me wonder. Hopefully I got a pretty good deal other than the 9k tach in that they are in almost perfect condition and the mileage was within 300 miles of the other and cost me $152.50 Or was that too high?Bottom line you are saying that regardless of the year, mph,and rpm they all seem to be closley calibrated and accurate and all of the cable gear drive units are the same.

Yes they should all work indicating the proper MPH/RPM

BTW, IIRC I paid $250 for that nice set you see in the pictures and that was a couple of years ago.

Well now I know why I can't find a decent 140mph speedo setup: Posplayr has the friggen market cornered!

I'm pretty sure my '82 tach looks like Sedelen's with the triangle (not Posplayr's without it), but the redline is a meager 9K, not 9.5.

I put a set of '83 GS1100ED gauges on my '82 GS1100EZ, they seem to work well, didn't change out anything else. How accurate? at least as accurate as the '82 85mph gauges.

I think I figured out the mystery. The gauges (or at least the tach) above may actually be from a GS750 which had the "triangle" and the higher redline. Look at this tach: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SUZUKI-1982...Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c2cd90e52&vxp=mtr

Realize that I view the gauge cluster as one of the final elements of my ED build and so the difference between $150 and $250 is mute.
Also one thing to watch out for, the 83 gauges at least seem to suffer a condition where the face plates will distort and they don't lay flat under the glass. I think the tach on my bike was NOS or at least very nice replacement and it ended up curving. So you have to watch out for that.

Here is the picture from your post #7 and yet another picture of My 83 gauges.

I never realized that Suzuki had a 9K and a 9.5K reline for the 82 tach, but clearly both of your tachs are of the same style as the regardless if they are 9K or 9.5K redline; They are distinctly different to the 83 tach in my picture.

Both 83 gauges (speedo and tach) have the lettering on the outside of the mph/rpm tick marks. On the 82 the numbers are on the inside.

Now I see what you're talking about! The location of the numbers, and it was pointed out also about that friggin triangle. Time will sort this out though. But, I bought them as a '83 gauges cluster and it does have that 140 mph speedo and 9.5K from wherever it came. I could be wrong but I don't think the 9.5K tach came out until '83 for the GS1100E. Could it be as a result of the welded crank modification that came out somewhere in the '82 model year?

I will take this pic of this '83 GS1100E as for what '83 gauges should look like, since I've read about this bike and know a little bit about it's history.

The attached picture is from an article in Cycle 4/82 reviewing the GS1100EZ. It shows the 9K RPM tach with the 85 MPH speedo. If anything I would think the GS750 would have a higher redline but I don't know.

Here is another article from 5/82 attached shows the same gauges with 85 Mph speedo and 9K tach.

I scanned both articles for what they say is the redline but have see neither that or the rated hp.

Here's some pic's of a pristine '82 GS1100E, it's got a good shot of the gauges,
the only difference in my two gauge clusters is in the red line, one at 9K and the other at 9.5K.

He also has a really nice '83 GS1100E, as well with lots of other bikes to include other GS's.
Must have lots of dough.

I understand he pickup a some of his bikes at steep discounts but he certainly has a collection that is for sure. :) I used to scan him site but have not been there for a while. I think he is a member here as well.

Did you miss my earlier post? I think your gauge cluster may be from a GS750E (or at least the tach is). The GS750E had the triangle and the 9.5K redline.

No I didn't thanks. With what I know and what's been said and shown here, I would have to believe it very well could be, and most likely is a GS750E tach. I was thinking though, perhaps I should put the lower redline tach on it since it's an '82, could keep me out of trouble.....
but my bike I do believe has the welded crank if I can believe what was posted sometime back.

Most bikes tend to drop off power as you approach redline anyway, but if you have any mods like pipe, pods, and jetting, your engine may happily soar past redline. I'm afraid to admit how often I've done that on my 1100.

Amusing side story: The first time I pegged the throttle on my Busa, I was paying more attention to keeping the front end down and keeping the bike straight than looking at the tach. Then the power just died and I was sure I must have bent a valve. But the bike ran fine afterwards and I realized that I had just hit the electronic rev limiter. My 1100 could use one of those.

You got that right. I haven't rode anything more powerful than my GS1100E, I don't think I can, at least going through that wide open throttle thing. Just keeping the front end down and going straight on that bike is enough for me. I usually overrun the tach redline by shifting at the redline, it just gets there so fast, I just ball park it.
But I don't do that to often, because that bike tries to get away from me, unlike my GS1000 which has just enough power without getting squirrely.
