DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I recently resurrected a 79 GS850. I took it for a short run today to get all the burps and farts out of it and noticed my speedo not responding. It's a mechanical speedometer, linked to the front wheel.

I disconnected the cable and made sure that it was spinning. Check.
I pinched the spinning cable to see it it still spun when met with resistance. Check
So that leaves the housing itself? I've never opened one or replaced one so I am in the dark as to what I should look for, or if I should even look.

Thanks

I just removed the cable from the back of the speedometer. It was spinning when I moved the bike.

If I can jump in on this thread......
I was just at the shop getting tires on the GS550E and on the way home after about a mile the Speedometer just died. When I got it home I saw that the gear system was put in at an angle the put the cable in a acute angle, the rubber around the tight bend has cracked away.

I'm guessing not, but if I straightened out the kink would it work again maybe?

If not, would this > https://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=1446 work to replace it?

Thanks for the Help!

new cables are cheap and easy to find just about anywhere. It looks like the linked one will work as well as any. Trying to unkink a bent cable just isn't worth it.

speedo

Kung Fu,
Your's stopped working all together? Mine just runs about ten mph slow, still scrathing my head about that one.
You said the cable turns, have you disconnected from the wheel and tried hooking a drill to the cable to see if the speedo turns?
Cracking the speedo open doesn't look easy, replacing them is a little costly.
Good luck, bill
