A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Dear All,

I have a beautiful '83 GS 750E w/32,000 miles on it. Yesterday I was riding and the speedometer and the odometer stopped working. I am wondering if you all think it is a connector plug that came undone, or a fixture that needs to be completely replaced. It is very odd that it just up and quit. Thanks for your assistance.

Isn't the speedometer driven from a cable coming from the front wheel hub? If so check to see if the inner cable is broken or maybe the outer cable has come loose at either end.

Does the speedo move at all?

Does the speedo move at all?

Sometimes when the inner cable snaps you still get some movement on the speedo needle. The inner cable is still being driven and makes the broken part turn a little.

Hmmm, I do believe you need to order a new speedometer drive cable. :-) :-)

I just replaced the speedo cable on my 750E. First clue that it was going was wild swings of the needle, then total nothing. Really chapped my arse, since I'd just replaced the speedo head (original odo drive gears were stripped, unrepairable).

Pull the cable at the speedo head, and see if you can rotate the square end by hand. If you can, you need a new cable. Pulling it all the way through will show you where the break was, most likely down at the hub end.

$19 for a new cable, including the sheath, at my local shop.
