A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Speedometer Reads Max

Greetings,

I just replaced the speedo cable on my 79GS1000 with one that I ordered off the net. I replaced my broken cable AND the sheath as one unit and everything fits well.

I took it for a cruise, and the speedometer flipped all the way to the right to the max speed as I was moving along in my neighborhood around 20mph. I rode a bit longer, and noticed that the odometer is spinning normally. A mile in the real world reads as a mile on the odometer. If I walk the bike backwards the needle will spin back to zero.

Anybody have any idea whats going on with this thing?

was it a genuine suzuki cable? it sounds like the inner cable is too long and it is sticking up inside the speedo too far

I got the cable from bikebandit.com - it said it would work. And its the only one I've been able to find that has the correct connector on both ends.

That being said - I was wondering if I cut a piece of the speedo cable off from the end that goes into the gagues if that would do it. It seemed pretty darn long to me when it fit in.

About how long should it be?

When the needle goes all the way over to the right, disconnect the cable at the speeo. If the needle still stays there loosely reconnect the cable and walk the bike backwards. If the needle then returns to zero, I'd say it's time to open up the speedo to find out what's broken or damaged inside.

So something in the speedo might be broken then.

Thats just great.

It was working fine until the cable snapped. From what I've read if you take apart the speedo assy its almost impossible to get it back.

This is good info for me...I'll be replacing both the speedo and the tach cables. Sounds like I'm gonna have some fun.

You've read incorrectly.
