A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Gentlemen,

This is on my '82 GS1100GL with 26k miles or so, which supposedly has the dreaded "gold" spline but it looks silverish to me, can anyone confirm?

What do you fellas think, does it need replacing?

No question about it, replace it.

can you ride it while waiting for the replacement spline? sure...

Use a cool whip plastic container or similiar size.
Fill with and inch of gas or deisel fuel.
Put spline in posts up and let soak for an hour.
Use old toothbrush and "brush it's teeth".
Remove and let dry.
Now you have a crystal clean spline to get a real good look.
Also can tell better if it's gold(weak) or silver(good)
It will be free of any sludge that may hasten wear.
Ready for a fresh coat of Moly-60.

BTW, that spline should probably be replaced, but may survive until the next rear tire change (under 5-6K miles?)....probably last if you don't hammer on it.

But if you've got a new tire on, then save yourself some effort and find a good used black for $50-60 and do it now.

Thank you fellas, I just bought a silver one off ebay from an Intruder.

That spline doesn't look anywhere near as bad as some of the others I've seen posted on here. Doesn't look gold either. I'd do as suggested and clean it really good. It's hard to tell from the pic if it's worn, or just really dirty.

I bought a new one last year from cyclepartsnation for ( I think) $65.00 delivered last year. Look around, prices can very and why buy used to save $5-$15.

I didn't see any new ones in that price range!! All I saw was $120 average. :(
Too late now anyway, the used one is on it's way. I hope it looks as good as in the pic.

Edit:
OK, I feel better, cyclepartsnation has them for $131.55 now. My used one for $50 shipped now sounds reasonable again. :D

It's weird how you can stare at those pics and see different things. At first I wasn't sure but now I see how worn it is.

the reason using a used one to save a few bucks is certain used ones will have zero wear after 30 years if it is the right one. Just keep the Honda Moly on it and your good to go now.
